$1 domain registrations!

checked the f2s.com deals... what's the catch? it sounds like a glorious deal... I have been writing some cool cgi stuff and I was looking for a place to test it, but you can't beat a free web host that gives you 20 megs and a cgi-bin!

well I'm not sure about DomainZero I got a free domain name and can't figure out for the life of me how to get it to point to my hypermart webpage. Now the domain name I wanted is not available and stuck on DomainZero. Of course if someone could help I would sure appreciate it.

Sounds like they charge you for another year ($35) to switch away. Anybody know otherwise?

I don't think they charge for transferring OUT of register.com. Only charge if you xfer INTO register.com, which makes sense, since they are taking over the domain. But it is pretty unclear. And makes all the difference, since if they do charge $35 for xferring, then it is a ripoff, but if they don't, it is a great deal! $1 for the first year, and then $8 or so for the second year. 2 years for $4.50 a year!!

Does anyone really know for sure which is correct???

Okay, I just spoke with Tanya (9-430-00) at Register.com customer service. What she told me was that if you are transferring away from register.com, there is no charge (but the new registrar can charge you). So, it looks like you wait 11.5 months, and xfer to another registar, and it is a hot deal!!!

The key to moving the registration away from one registrar and to another is that the one you are moving it awayt from does not have to do anything for the transfer to happen. They do have to do something to block the transfer, for any of a number of reasons such as a trademark dispute. It is the regitrar that you are transfering the domain name to that has to do all the work and pay the $9 to NSI. Thus it your old registrar has nothing to charge you for.

Note this only applies to the TLD's handled by ICANN, i.e. com, net, org.
