I usually just try to keep it fast enough to run the games I want. I only upgrade if there's a really good deal on a next/nextnext generation part that's significantly faster.

Although sometimes the thought of being able to get a smoking fast system, ie, get a i7 920 at this great deal, OC to 4GHz would sway me to get it despite me being perfectly satisfied with a 3GHz core2duo.

I could get away with basic web browsing just fine on a tuned up 1ghz machine running Win2k and only 256 meg of Ram. I just have to know it's limits.
This.

When you get started it's "omg my shit runs so hot it requires 5 case fans, lolz", then you realize you don't need all that power. You still care about specs, hell, perhaps MORE. You just realize if you all you are doing is web surfing you don't need a multi-core proc with 4GB of ram.

Of course, most of us on this forum have at least one task that requires a bit of oomph, be it video editing, gaming, or whatever.

this thread has me pondering. I didn't want to ponder these things for a little while longer. Not until Fall, at the earliest. Money needs to go toward other things first.

As long as it can run a few games at greater than 30fps I'm golden. I built this thing and can't even remember what I put in it at this point.

31 in a few days. I care. Even though the number of games I play is reduced, I still just bought a GTS 250, and I spent a long time justifying not making the leap to i7 recently (i.e. past year lol), sticking with the core 2 quad q6600 till the next tick (or is it tock) of the architecture happens. And since I think it just did, maybe xmas is time to buy.

35. Stopped caring after my first kid was born. Will probably do one last upgrade, then start buying from Dell after that since the price to performance ratio seems almost even and I don't want to waste my time and frustration on another build.

27 and I don't care so much anymore. I don't see myself upgrading my current machine anytime soon unless something craps out. The only exception being hard drive, I may put a bigger one in at some point in the future.

I have an Athlon 64 X2 4800+/8600GT and it runs everything I need just fine.

I'm 39, and the only time I care is if there is something I can't do. Running an Intel e8400 and an NVidia 9800GT for about 2 years now and I don't have any reason to upgrade.

44, I liked being out in front about 14 years ago. Haven't built one in 6 years and all my stuff is old now. Would like to start new again but I haven't kept up on any of the latest and greatest and have no idea what's even considered good any more. Hell, I still run an AGP card.

30+ and I care about the specs only as they relate to my purposes so I had to choose the "farkin" option. I want more than it just to run but don't need it to be latest and greatest.

57 yrs old.

Computers are just another hobby but the're cheap enough that you can buy uber stuff and still keep it reasonable.....under 5 grand for a really nice machine.

I've only been into the computer hobbie for @ 8 yrs and specs really never meant alot but I do know "Quick", Quality" and "Nice" and that will probably keep me spending 'till I get tired of it or another hobby.

im over 40, and the spec thing is situational. for my personal use, i care very much what the specs are. for customers, i give them what they ask for, and if they ask me for recommendations ill build to what task they want it to do. at home, i have a few computers for the kids enjoyment, and maintain them to work for what they do. i used to get all wrapped up in "get the best" but it got too costly so i relaxed a bit and made do with what would work for realistic tasking.

31 and I stopped caring after the Xbox 360 came out. Now all I want a computer to do is run my work applications and web.

I am 31 now....god I'm old. I used to be one of those hw freaks...had a good time and learned a lot though. My last major upgrade was 3-4 years ago. I still use my 939 board and samsung tccd ram. Upgraded a year or so ago to x2 cpu with a 4850. I just need it to run, and do a lil gaming on it, once in a while.

30+ here. As long as I can play games at "reasonable" settings, I'm happy. So, specs do matter, but they don't have to be bleeding edge.

I replaced my AGP rig in December with my first PCI-E "budget" build. I'd really like to get a SSD.
