https://www.brookings.edu/blog/fixg...he-first-amendment-results-from-a-new-survey/

Republicans and Democrats alike.

51% of the surveyed students also think it's acceptable to shout out a speaker so as to prevent an audience from hearing the speech.

44% think that hate speech isn't protected by the first amendment.

This is very troubling.

I'm less interested in the results in this one survey as I am the change in these views over time.

How can I be sure that this isn't kids just being kids like always?

Because it isn't just kids. Current POTUS has this position.

I voted No.

If they were kids in the sense of being 5th graders, I would be more inclined to see your point. But these are young adults, and speaking for myself and my impression of others I've known, a young adult's general impressions about the world aren't easily dislodged over time.

Just another round of OMG the sky is falling people who haven't experienced much in life have ideas I don't agree with. Get those damn hippies off my lawn with their sex and drugs. Western civilization is about to collapse because they wear flannel and listen to something grunge.

Keep calm and trust humanity a bit man.

Um, hippies are nonviolent. Can you really consider people who are willing to use violence to stop those from saying things they don't like hippies? I don't know of anyone on the Right that claims these people are hippies. And, for the left to be willing to use fascist tactics to stop speech they don't like, then yeah, I think we should all be worried. Who is going to stop the crazy on the right when the left is copying fascists?

I used examples of people freaking out about young adults and the coming failure of American society. Hippies being from the 60s, gen-x slackers from the 80s/90s.

So your argument is that hippies were weird, and young adults today wanting to use violence to stop those with ideas they disagree with are equally weird. One wants to bash your skull in, the other wants to be naked and run through flowers...

whoosh again......

My argument is I don't put a lot of stock in or freak out over polls of college students. Keep killing those poor straw people in your mind.

So if you poll people and they say to murder all people of group x, its just young college kids being young and dumb.

My favorite scene in Blues Brothers was when they ran the Illinois Nazis off the bridge.

That could be considered "violence against free speech" ... pretty much everybody I know would cheer for that scene, even if, deep down, they really don't want to hurt those people.

Please think of the straw.

That is the logical stance you just took. By equating hippies and people who want to use violence to stop those that they disagree with, you have created the straw man by definition. I simply pointed out the false equivalency. You likely realize this, which is why you are not calling straw-man on me. Do as you wish.

Your entire "argument" has been arguing against a point I never made in my original post.

Except, the problem is that hippies were not anywhere near wanting to use fascist tactics to get people to agree with them. People who want to use violence against another for their speech, and nothing more is fascist. That puts those people on a very different level than "people who haven't experienced much in life have ideas I don't agree with."

You tell me how hippies and people agreeing with literal fascist tactics are equal in any meaningful way and I will agree that I was wrong.

You could have said that 80% of undergrads oppose violent suppression of offensive speech. That really is an overwhelming majority. There probably are very very few other issues that you could get this much consensus on.

The author's commentary on that point:

These results are notable for several reasons. First, the fraction of students who view the use of violence as acceptable is extremely high. While percentages in the high teens and 20s are “low” relative to what they could be, it’s important to remember that this question is asking about the acceptability of committing violence in order to silence speech. Any number significantly above zero is concerning.

Those who dont know history are doomed to repeat it...

Hitler's vitriolic beer hall speeches began attracting regular audiences. He became adept at using populist themes, including the use of scapegoats, who were blamed for his listeners' economic hardships.[97][98][99] Hitler used personal magnetism and an understanding of crowd psychology to his advantage while engaged in public speaking.[100][101] Historians have noted the hypnotic effect of his rhetoric on large audiences, and of his eyes in small groups.[102] Alfons Heck, a former member of the Hitler Youth, later recalled:

Yep, that is one of the signs of a person you don't want to have unchecked power and probably should never vote someone like that into office.

Not sure what that has to do with murdering people for ideas. Care to explain why the precursors of fascism has anything to do with what I said?
