that's me, 100%

hmm, yes it does. You're not going to get into things like Bolt Thrower or Dead Milkmen unless you have a weird edge. And if you do, you will find them.
I think (read: it's divine truth) that novices should not be exposed to artists that have specifically tried NOT to target them.

i've been in music as a professional. i'm tired of people listening to LITERALLY 5 seconds of my Hot Rats (Frank Zappa) tape and immediately condemning it as shit because it doesn't have a commercial production sound and doesn't have a kick in the first 3 seconds, and the hook within 5.

i've had innumerable times my tapes of bowie being kicked out of the stereo because everyone wanted to listen exclusively to 1. madonna 2. duran duran 3. some commercial crap italian singer which is the same exact music that was on rotation on the radio and ALL they deemed worthy of consuming, because their mind was like a trash can to be stuffed by the industry.
AND THEN having the same people show up when bowie dies and saying oooh major tom we're gonna miss you. really.

i'm not worried that you might like what i like. i'm concerned about the effect that i know for a fact will happen when people who don't know their head from their ass are exposed to good music.
See you need to learn whats appropriate music in what places.

I don't really have a favorite band, but I've been listening to this song just about every day on my way to work. I'm heavy along the burn out chart having a full time job with a major project coming up due the same time I have finals on a full time student workload. It's been an awful couple months, but it's just about over.

bowie would have loved to be a hitler.

as for "not-Pixies" bands, i'm not really fond of any of them (Smashing Pumpkins, Sonic Youth, etc), but i'm ok with people liking them, i just bundle them into another type of music. To me, they are garage / indie, while the pixies are pure post-punk.

by which i mean basically just the Pixies, everyone else just went New Wave.

To me, post-punk would be Gang of Four, The Au Pairs, PiL, etc. Not sure what I'd call the Pixies. Just 'indie', I suppose. But that's just arguing terminology. Tried to like Sonic Youth, do like some of their stuff, but they're a bit too 'chin stroking' for me. Kind of felt listening to them was like eating your cruciform vegetables - somehow it's supposed to be good for you, but actually I find them a bit dull.

I mean I kinda picked those tracks for a reason. Sober doesn't show off Tool's full range and is way too short. NIN was actually really hard because each album sounds so damn different.

Dark Side of the Moon, you know this is the "1 song" thread and not "1 album" right?

I like NIN (despite at first being wary of them because of Trent Reznor's flock-of-seagulls type past incarnation) but I never liked Pink Floyd. So not sure what therefore to conclude about Tool (who I've never listened to).

Nordic Giants A thousand Lost Dreams for those who prefer instrumental stuff (though honestly, I could pick about 20 of their songs.)
Or, Shine if you prefer something with vocals
They aren't my favorite and I have broken the rules by giving 2 tracks.

Music is too personal. If someone doesn't like 'A style of music', giving them 1 song to try to convince them just isn't going to cut it. Also, mood really plays a huge role in it, timing has to be right. Now, if said person already likes nearly the same bands as you, then most likely they will like what you play them, but even then it still is personal taste. Berating others because they don't like what you like is pointless and frankly pretty self pretentious. Listening to people bemoan radio rock and music for the masses is a huge annoyance as well. It's even funnier when people who make music act the same way and wonder why no one likes their music. We get it music companies are asshats, but these days there is zero excuse to lock yourself into that realm. I as everyone else have music I will tolerate and music I can't stand, but I don't think less of those who do like it or those who made it. Music takes talent. Even the most basic song.

Don't know the last 2 but the rest are all among the standard bearers of their genres of doom, heavy, and prog metal.
I sampled Shudder to Think and Volbeat, and I mostly dislike the vocal style, will have to give them another listen when I'm in a less judgemental mood

I FOUND IT !

so, back many many years ago (1986?) i was in the Hamptons, and somewhere in a Caldor, there was a $1 bin of records.
I thought "how bad can they be" and picked up like 3 of them. One of them was called Rave On Andy White, which i will always remember as the flattest, most useless, most unexciting, worst album i have ever bough, and i bought Black Tie White Noise, so i know a thing or two about bad albums.
