Well it really depends on some things, but I'm sure you could come up to 10k easy including peripherals. Does he plan to play music? Some nice Rocket speakers on a 7.1 receiver would eat up a nice chunk. Video playback? A 36" LCD would run 5k (I like the Sony, but on the AV boards they're rated as nice but overpriced). Heck, a 36" LCD would be nice for a gaming system. So, in conclusion, 1000-2000 for the actual computer, 8000-9000 for output devices. You'd get something worth while that way.

Exactly. Or something along these lines ...

If your friend is serious (or if you are serious) then do him a big favor and slap him upside the head for being a insight-less ding dong. Someone asking someone else to build a 10k comp system won't get anywhere to using it to it's full capacity ... because they have the lack of knowledge just in the fact that they are asking someone to build a 10k system.

A very nice 2k system and a 8k multimedia system will kick so much ass and impress the hell out of anyone for years to come ... way more than some sole 10k comp system.

$2000 for the computer and $2000 for two tickets to Rio, Brazil. $6000 for booze, girls, and sex. That's $10,000 well spent.

FX51s wont run dual. Only a single FX51 in a dual board.

alternatively... spend 5K on the uber system, and keep the other 5K in a checking account for future upgrades to keep it top of the line

fact is, even a 10K system bought tomorrow will be pitiful in a year or two without constant upgrades (most people I know do 2-3 major upgrades per year).

I'm sure we all have stories of that $5,000 computer we bought in the early/mid-90's and how much ass it kicked at the time. hehe. mine was 133 MHz, 16 MB of RAM, 4 GB hdd, and a 4x CD-ROM. lol. I thought I was the total shiznit at the time (and I was... but that changed a few months later).

umm, is this for real or wat?

$2000 for the computer and $2000 for two tickets to Rio, Brazil. $6000 for booze, girls, and sex. That's $10,000 well spent.

Good thinking. Better yet have that money dumped into my bank account. I'll have that little trip and the comp arranged @ only 100% of the deposite and 10 thousand years upon delivery of goods.

I hear some African generals are in need of funds to help them smuggle money out of the country.....

Spend $2000 of it on a 23" Apple Cinema Display.

I really don't know where you're going to spend $8000 for a computer, but man, that cinema display is the most gorgeous thing ever. In fact, just spend the rest of the money at Apple.

Dual 2 Ghz G5, 4GB of Ram, 250GB serial ATA harddrive, 23" Cinema Displays, modem, DVD burner, Logitech Z680 6.1 speakers, and an ATI Radeon 9800 Pro. Total = $8,016.95

seeing as pretty much everything he puts into it if he bought it now, would be obsolete in 6 months (especially with btx, pciE, ddr-2 etc)

i would just blow the money on stuff that will still be around and a viable standard then.

something like 2 20" LCDs, 4 73 gb raptor RAID SATA drives, a 300 gb sata storage drive, some really expensive speakers, and a 65" dvi widescreen projection lcd display as his 3rd monitor (so far i've only managed to spend around $2800 though) . i wouldnt spend too much on the actual "computer" since thats the most obsoletable, but i figure you cna easily still afford a dual opteron with whats left.

i agree this is a blatant waste of money. my computer only cost me slightly over $1200 , and ive got a 20" lcd and athlon 64 3000 in there.

First, if he's serious and wants a 10k system to brag about since he won't put it to real use,...the biggest brag of all would be to have a quad cpu system. If I was building this type of system, it would have to sit in a clear case, otherwise it'll be in those big(and ugly) SWTX cases that comes in these motherboards. So, IF I had a custom nice looking acrylic case to put all the goodies and to take nice pictures of it and "brag", I may bother, other its not worth bothering I think. But only one I would do is Opteron in EE which consumes about 25W each, for four should be had for about $1200 each I think.

I know he says 'a computer' but with 10k.... why not buy multiple systems with serious horsepower?

Depending on what the pc will be used for (or pc's) would depend on how you spend your friends money here.

Personally, Id rather have multiple pc's with decent speed than a seriously top of the line one.

the thing is if he has to ask someone to build it than there is no way he will get nearlly any good use out of it

i recommend getting a very large widescreen TV 60" ($5000)+
and a semi decent surround sound setup ($3000) + the comp ($2000)

Oh, I totally agree he'd never get any good use out of it. I'd probably RAID 2 or 3 drives just for the fun of it (for me, building it), as well as make it a dual processor machine (again, for the fun of me building it). At least he couldn't complain that I skimped then.

Get a Sun Blade 2500 fully loaded, might actually exceed the budget a little, but it will sure be a unique thing to have at home.

Heh, a nicely set up one will exceed that budget. If its actually "fully loaded" (if you meant all the possible stuff you could add on) you will go WAY over that budget.

Get some 15k SCSI drives, dual Opterons, 2GB RAM, 2xbig LCD's, 9800XT, a quality projector (to use instead of a monitor, or for TV output), some kind of TV card (or ATi AIW card), use it as a HTPC and gaming PC as well.

You could set up a big 500GB+ storage system for DVD's/mp3's etc.

Or buy more than one PC, like 2x3k PC's and LAN them together, then you can have multiplayer gaming.

If somehow I had that much money that I HAD TO blow on a computer I'd call up VOODOOPC and get a top of the line desktop and notebook from them.

with outrageous order like that (10K) they can probably do some out of the ordinary stuff for you, like their gold plated notebook PCs that some rich middle eastern customer's ordered.

Whenever someone wants to blow a wad of cahs on a computer, I always have to chime in with the same message:

"Get an awesome desk and chair!"

Who wants to put a $10K PC on a folding card table? And I agree with the others - a big, beautiful monitor and very high end 64-bit PC will still be only $2000-4000 depending on components. A gorgeous desk with awesome layout, an awesome printer on the side, and a super-comfortable chair really make the computing experience all the better.

Ok, im not too sure if my friend is bullshitting me or not. But he says he has 10,000 that he not only HAS to blow on a system, but WANTS to blow on a system. WTF.
Of course he's bullsh*ting you.
