Ok, im not too sure if my friend is bullshitting me or not. But he says he has 10,000 that he not only HAS to blow on a system, but WANTS to blow on a system. WTF.
Ok, so he asked me if i could build it for him and i said sure, because it sounded like a pretty sweet project if he speaks truth.
So, what kind of specs should i be looking at for this UBER computer?
I can build regular comp and am pretty knowlegeable about them, but 10,000 rage comps are out of my league.

Im looking for advice on the components of the system:
- A sweet modable case
- 4x Opterons?? 2x?
- Where the heck can i find a MB that supports 4x opterons?
- A sweet 10,000RPM Raptor RAID array
- The VERY BEST VIDEO CARD, (did they ever produce any of those dual core 9700 pro's we saw pics of a while back?)
- Do regular ATX power supplies support these types of systems? (i know im going to need a fatty PSU though)
- 1 GIG of ram per CPU? 2GIGs per? 4!!!?

What else? Be creative, $10,000 were talking here, post your most OWNAGE l337 fantasy system build EVER.

If you want to spend that much money on a system why set the storage standards so low with 10k SATA disks? Get a real HBA with 4 Channels, a locker with quad SCA backplanes and a squall line of 15k disks. Or go FCAL.

Anyways, I have NO problem spending 10k trust me.

Cheers!

First off, I won't even get into wether or not its worth it to spend 10k versus 5k or 2k or whatever.

Having said that, forget about 4 cpus. If he wants to run Windows go dual at most. To run Windows and 4way you will need to move to Advanced Server, and thats a decent chunk of change right there.

As far as cases go I am very happy with my Antec 1080amg. Its got tons of space and comes with a nice 430w PSU. Though that may not work on a duel opteron system. And its not "mod-able" in the sense you are probably asking. But its a great case.

Also, if you really want to spend money on nice stuff, forget about Raptors. They are nice (and I own one) but you will want to go SCSI.

Going with 2gigs of memory will pretty much assure that he has more then he will use anytime soon. No need for 4. For the video card the 9800xt is pretty much tops. Though if he doesn't care about gaming Matrox has a few very nice cards.

Whats he want to do with this thing? If gaming is not a big deal that opens up a lot of pro type video options (though if he isn't into 3d modeling and such he wont notice what they can do really). Basically just get a 9800xt or a 5950u and that will cover gaming and lots of other bases.

Edit Oh, and past a few thousand your only real options to get into the 10k range will be storage and display. Get 2 or 3 Samsung 213t's. That and a nice RAID array will soak up will over half of his budget. Heck, you can blow 10k just on drives and an enclosure and that would only barely enter into the realm of high end storage.

if you were his friend you'd advise him not to build a 10k system, that's just silly. Even with 3k you can get a top of the line system that'll still need to be upgraded in a few months. Blowing 10k on one system is silly considering it can finance a top of the line system for 1-3 years.

Multiple Display LCD's (umm.. 3 of them)- Sexy and but costly.

what a waste IMO for a home / non professional rig 1200-1400 should be the absolute max 2000 including speakers monitor etc.

anything else is thousands of dollars for marginal returns unless your friend is a millionare I would call him an idiot

even if i was a millionare i wouldnt spend that much on a comp

spending that much money on a comp just makes no sense because bigger and better stuff comes out so quickly

that 10K system will be worth less than half that in one year

Seriously, dont spend 10k on one computer. Spend 2-3k on a top of the line now, only splurging on a really nice set of speakers and maybe a high end display(since you wont be upgrading these as rapidly). Then save the rest to upgrade and build for the next 10 years or so. It really just doesnt make any sense to make one huge system unless you actually need it for some special purpose.

Not trying to nitpick but Win2k Server supports 4 CPU no problem. Advanced Server supports up to 8 CPUs.

As for 10k on a system. He's either BSing you or got money to burn badly, in which case he can send it to me What's he need to do with this system?

I would reccommend lighting $100 bills on fire for the next 50 days, and then dropping $5k on a computer. The result will be about the same. lol. Another option would be to trade cars at a dealer every week!

I just dont see how you can possibly justify the minimal differences between a very fast computer for $3kand a extremely fast one for $10k. Just seems like a waste, but it sure would be fun!!

Lol, no problem. And you are totally right. Not really sure why I put Advanced in there.

he may have a legit reason... ie tax reasons... altho... it's a little late to do that for last year... heh. I had a friend way back when.. he had to blow 3k on a computer for his business for taxes. heh

You can't be serious but I'd either buy a really nice monitor (but you'd probably have to squint at it), or I'd charge a few thousand for a "setup fee."

How I would spend it:

$8,000 For a nextgen projection TV that does 1080P

$2,000 For a system with DVI out

$1500-$2500 on the box.
Any more than $2500, including Raptors or SCSI, would be a waste for a non-server box.
That leaves a cool $7500 for a display and speakers.
