FYI for all those who got in on the Zune deal, both Target and Staples have zune gear on clearance. I got a $20 case for $5 @ target, and staples had pretty much everything zune related marked down, most just a few dollars right now. YMMV of course.

Visited my local Target last night and no Zune clearance only Ipod stuff on clearance. I'll try Staple today and/or another Target.

Tried both the Targets in my area and the only Zune stuff on clearance were very ugly Zune cases. Nothing else. Haven't tried Staples yet.

Well my zune got here today and the case I bought for it at Target sucks! It doesn't fit right at all, especially around the screen.
Radioshack had some ones marked down that are similar to the Speck rubber type cases so I ordered one in store and hopefully that will be a better fit.

Mine looked brand new. Only way of knowing it's a refurb is the refurb sticker on the back of the unit along the top edge and the many references to refurbished printed on the retail package.

Same here. Had the sticker on the back, but otherwise looked brand new.

Another clue was that the hard drive already had some crappy music already on it.

i got mine today. yeah i cant see how its refurb except the sticker and the refurbished line on the box. such a great deal that i posted.

the hdd crappy music i think are default ones that came with microsoft zunes. shouldn't it be wifi enabled or something so i can send music out to peers or something? or is this a feature that i dreamt about?

pros: like new. cheap. 30GB! video!
cons: WTF no x64 support ms! :| (there are some hacks for that after googling it though, but unofficial)

Got mine last night, nothing except the box and the sticker to say it's a refurb. Looks new to me.

Same issue with 64 bit here, going to have to hook it to the HTPC just to get the .inf file and modify it to use on my main system running XP64.

I don't think the WiFi is available unless there's another Zune nearby. That should change with the new firmware, whenever that gets released.

Overall, it's pretty good for the price, it's really only the software that's bugging me.

you have to plug it to the usb on the back of the computer...it is what's recommended by Microsoft. As soon as I started doing that my problems went away.

Lol, that never occurred to me. Good call

And it shouldn't really matter where it's plugged in... I've got a usb hard drive plugged into the front usb and works great. But then again, I'll give it a try, you just never know sometimes.

I got mine and it looks great, but it didn't seem to come with a manual, only two small booklets; one with the usual yada yada and the other with the quick start info.

Did I just not get one? Is it available somewhere?

Just got mine. Despite the "refurbished" sticker it looks brand spanking new. Not a single blemish on it.

I opted to download the Zune software instead of using the CD. Everything installed fine on my Vista Premium HP Pavilion lappy but it took about 10 minutes for the software to discover the Zune for the first time. Once found, it said there was a firmware upgrade and all I had to do was click a button and the Zune was updated automatically. It then synced up with my music library on my network drive at a rate of about 1 GB per minute.

The Zune software is essentially a spiffed up Windows Media Player 11 with some extras specifically for Zune. I'm used to Media Player so i have no problems with the software.

Overall I'm extremely pleased with this deal. Thanks OP!

Mine didn't come with a manual either. I'm still figuring out how to delete the crappy music and video that came with it! And how come you can't have a play list for video? Am I missing something?

What I did was install the patch that makes your zune act like an external HD and deleted the files manually.

Maybe you don't even need the patch, but the zune didn't show up under "My Computer" until I installed the patch.

Here's the link. It doesn't really work that well, but it at least let me delete the worthless pics and videos on there.

i got mine about 3 days ago. it looks brand new to me. no scratches or marks or anything. just the 'refurb' sticker on the back.

i played around with it a little bit, then set it aside. later i went to upgrade the firmware.. and thats when it all went wrong. for some reason i think the firmware upgrade didnt complete properly. i was pretty upset by this because i thought it was broken.

so i did some searching and found out that you can 'reset' the zune. it basically wipes everything off the hd (all that preloaded stuff) and sets it back to v1.0 firmware i believe

after i did that, i went through the update process again. at first i thought i was going to get the same result but eventually it all seemed to work out. i checked to make sure, and it shows the updated firmware etc.

it took about 3hrs of reading and searching to figure out how to reset the zune, but now it seems to work perfectly.

got mine from the VIP deal... listening on it right now... mine is almost new but has minor scratches on the dial, and very faint water damage marks between the screen and LCD... I called MS and they said they won't fix LCD issues like mine

That's the reason that has kept me from pulling the trigger on this. From a five minute googling it's my understanding that Zune currently doesn't accept flac and most likely never will.
