So I saw the trailer a while back and was a bit puzzled by it and now some word is starting to spread about JJ Abram's new monster flick. I've always liked Goodman so there's that and I've liked Mary Elizabeth Winstead since she was in Die Hard IV.

I guess a new director takes the helm and thankfully the whole shaky cam thing seems to be gone but this does look to be more of a suspense/horror movie versus the scary/action movie of the original. The original Alien was a suspense/horror movie while the sequels were more of the scary/action variety so maybe this new movie will wind up being better than the original as the original Alien was light-years ahead of the sequels.

Anyone heard anything else about this movie? I must confess I am intrigued...

Saw this movie and it was pretty good, without giving out the plot or spoilers, all i will say it does have some references to the 2008 movie Cloverfield. Should you see it, I say, yea. Most movies these days are crap, this one sure isn't.

psych thriller in a bomb shelter

when I first saw the trailer to this, I thought a sequel to Hidden.

Basically unrelated to the original. Interesting nonetheless.

Dammit.

I mean, it sounds great. The trailers looked to showcase some great acting.

But dammit, I was hoping for some monster action. Maybe that's the "surprise" ending? Or perhaps it's more of an ending that's a nice surprise based more on the events of the film and there's nothing at all about monsters?

I'll see it, but I guess it's no longer a theater watch - I'll just wait to see it in the comfort of my own setup.

I've heard a few good things all ready, but haven't seen it.

Is one of the ones I have planned to see in the near future.

But I haven't see The Witch yet either.

Things like the original Alien and The Exorcist were very groundbreaking in their time, may people do not realize that I suppose.

I doubt these days you would get a jump in things along those lines at all, most things for a shock value these days is pretty much "been there done that" as far as suspense etc.

It's horrible, really slow, major plot holes, unanswered questions, lame ending tack on.

Basically a JJ Abrams movie.

I did not mind it, the sub plot of the doomsday prepper's history was not needed. I think the movie would have worked better without it.

I thought it was vastly better than Cloverfield. Although the ending action scene was pretty forced.

The payoff is there for the people that want to see "something".

The ending was so outrageous (good?..bad?). Abrams said there will be a sequel if the movie makes money.

Exactly - my wife and I rarely go to the theater (now with comfy full recliners) and a Cloverfield sequel would've been one I'd drag her to. As interesting as this is, not worth the theater anymore. Those sneaky bastids.

From what I heard the movie sounds like it has an Alford Hitchcock approach with a big pay off at the end.

If you saw War of the Worlds, it's basically the scene where Tom Cruise and his daughter are stuck in the basement with Tim Robbins. Except they turned the entire scene into a film.

The movie didn't need JJ Abrams or a name change (originally called The Cellar).

Whether it's M. Knight or JJ these gimmick movies get old really quickly.

This. Keep your money. We saw it based on ratings. Wish we'd waited to find out more before wasting the money.

Then again, depends on taste.
We liked it.
Sometimes the cast pulls the movie over the top, and that was the case with this.
John Goodman made the film creepy enough that the film was pretty good.
Not the best Sci-Fi or horror maybe, but seen worse.
Lots worse.

Takes a while to figure out what old John Goodman is really up to.
Is he nuts? Is he telling the truth? Can he be trusted?
Turns out to be.... well I won't give it away.

When she first wakes up and realized she's not in Kansas anymore , I wanted to yell out THAT'S WHAT YOU GET FOR FIGHTING WITH YOUR BOYFRIEND!

Best lines:
(John Goodman) Don't get stuck, we won't be able to get you. (something like that).
(Mary Elizabeth Winstead) You've got to be kidding. (something like that)
(Mary Elizabeth Winstead) F**K (near the end of the film. you had to be there, but quite the appropriate response. I know the audience was thinking exactly the same thing at that instant)

Obviously, there probably will be a part II.
But if I were the producers, I'd just stop here. (famous last words. they never seem to.)
And two of the three cast might carry over into the sequel. The third definitely will not.

pretty much this... saw it yesterday, it was intense, thrilling, & I was entertained. In hindsight, the 3rd act seemed kind of disconnected to the 1st two acts, but it was also entertaining so the flaw is forgivable

You just gave away the movie for those that haven't seen it.

I liked it. I mean, it's something that could wait for rental, but I don't regret paying for a movie theater ticket.

I think I'm going to go watch it tonight with my 15 yr old. I have a couple cheap movie tickets to use and it looks like it could be a decent movie to see.

Ouch ... the basement scene in War of the Worlds was terrible, I wanted them all to die!

That's the kind of info that really turns me off to this movie..
