You left out the Mormons, Jews and Methodists in your diatribe. Let's not play favorites!
What turned this into a rant against Christians? I am against twisting a thread into an opportunity for these kind of attacks.

That isn't a "diatribe". That's casting a little light on when someone compares a meditation getaway to a nazi training camp. Everything they listed as a "nazi" method is one employed by the church.

And yes, I'm sorry. In the future, I'll try to include more religions in my examples. Please point out the ones that try to actively promote theirs more over all others, without respect for other religions, than the ones I named for future inclusion. I'll be waiting anxiously.

The "I'm just a poor Christian under attack" card is really getting tired. Where's your righteous indignation against the person comparing them to nazis? Oh right...it didn't say anything about Christians.

I like the "throw to the lions" comment. Very holy roman of you.

Trust no one. Especially yourself.
Especially a 2000 year old, international, rich, men only - no females allowed in management - religious, superstition-promoting pedophilia organization.

You're the one with the fixation, bordering on obsession. This form of bashing is repugnant.
Could you relent in, what I have quite accurately called, "your diatribe"?
Let this thread get back on track. Just because you are ensnared in the decline of civilization doesn't mean that everyone reading this thread will be unable to overcome the trend toward civil entropy.
(Maybe even as a result of this thread, which seems to have nothing to do with Christians, or any form of religion for that matter.)

Frank Zappa said it best in the song Cosmik Debris - "Take your meditations and your preparations.....

"The mystery man came over
And he said I?m outta sight!
He said for a nominal service charge
I could reach nirvana tonight
If I was ready, willing and able
To pay him his regular fee
He would drop all the rest of
His pressing affairs and devote
His attention to me

But I said look here brother
Who you jiving with that cosmik debris?
Now who you jiving with that cosmik debris?
Look here brother, don?t waste your time on me

The mystery man got nervous
And he fidget around a bit
He reached in the pocket of his mystery robe
And he whipped out a shaving kit
Now I thought it was a razor
And a can of foaming goo
But he told me right then when the top popped open
There was nothin? his box won?t do
With the oil of aphrodite, and the dust of the grand wazoo
He said you might not believe this, little fella
But it?ll cure your asthma too

And I said look here brother
Who you jiving with that cosmik debris?
Now what kind of a guru are you, anyway?
Look here brother, don?t waste your time on me
(don?t waste your time)

I?ve got troubles of my own, I said
And you can?t help me out
So, take your meditations and your preparations
And ram it up your snout!
But I got the crystal ball, he said
And held it to the light
So I snatched it, all away from him
And I showed him how to do it right

I wrapped a newspaper ?round my head
So I looked like I was deep
I said some mumbo-jumbo, then
I told him he was going to sleep
I robbed his rings and pocketwatch
And everything else I found
I had that sucker hypnotized
He couldn?t even make a sound
I proceeded to tell him his future, then
As long as he was hanging around
I said the price of meat has just gone up
And your old lady has just gone down!

And I said look here brother-who you
Jiving with that cosmik debris?
Now is that a real poncho or is that a sears poncho?
Don?t you know, you could make more money as a butcher?
So, don?t waste your time on me
Don?t waste it, don?t waste your time on me
(shanti)"

Conehead.

If you recall, there is no charge for this offer.

Con artists are not specific to any race or religion and rarely does one get something for nothing. I think F. Zappa's references to meditation can be actively applied to any type of solicitation for services provided - whatever type of feelgood activity is being circumscribed.

bottom line like anything is buyer beware. If (*the reader*) feels they are easily suseptible or as Jabba says in Return of the Jedi, Weakminded Fools and easily brainwashed, by all means don't take advantage

I've never been to one of these retreats. A couple friends of mine have and they said it wasn't religious or anything. You have the opportunity to donate at the end of it. So its not really free unless you can't afford to donate or choose not to for some reason. I think these Vipassana people just really like to give people the opportunity to have a deep mediation experience. What they do is kind of similar to those of us who do volunteer work for charities. Its nice to give a little sometimes.
I like to meditate and I'm not religious and don't belong to any group or cult. I just like the feeling of my mind calming down. I haven't gone to one of these retreats though because it seems like such a difficult schedule.

I've tried this type of meditation, and I liked it a lot. I'm not sure I'm hardcore enough to go for a 10 day experience, but I took a class on Buddhism and for a couple days we worked with a woman who knew a lot about Vipassana meditation and I thought it was a great experience. I'll look into this, since I'm pretty interested in learning more about it.

I attend a Zen center, not exactly Vipassana, but along similar lines. Meditation is the most difficult thing I've ever done in my life, but among the most worthwhile. It really takes some balls to notice onesself with such clarity, most folks just stop - and it seems that you have that option here as well. I would suggest, as have some others here have, that you not give this a try unless you are serious about it, meditaion takes some real curiosity and commitment.

I notice the skepticism concerning a change in sleep patteren and diet, funny thing about meditation is you find that you need less sleep - and it isn't bad to change up our greazy American diet every now and then.

I wish that folks here who are bashing Christianity would chill out. Meditation isn't a competing religion, it is a means of looking. There are folks at my Zen center of many different nationalities, religions and ethnicities - we're not out to bash each other, so this doesn't get in the way.

I wouldn't consider myself a Christian, but it is, at it's core, a very fine belief system. And the New Testament is a really great book. I think that problem is that so few Christians bother to read it.

I was thinking about Vancouver too. The Washington Center is actually closer, but I've been meaning to get up to Vancouver to spend some time. Maybe we should meet at the Zeppelin Joint on the way back -- since we won't be able to acknowledge each other during our silent 10 days at Vipassana and we'll need to decompress from all the brainwashing anyway...

There's nothing wrong with weed and Led Zeppelin, but it should be said, that experience is nearly the opposite of meditation. One is sort of a disengaged checking-out (or spacing-out) and the other is an engaged awareness, it's as far at the other and of the meditation spectrum as a fistfight.

And though one should be aware of manipulative belief systems that prey on the weak, to call a meditation course a brainwashing is silly; it sounds like the talk of the brainwashed.

Oh, man! Good one! I read there a bit, and found this highly charged writing about a dude who struggled and finally became a Zen Master (tee hee!).
Both of these urls lead to a quip-packed site loaded with clever humoroids. :lips::lips::lips:
This is a common condition often cured by getting off the pot instead of getting-off on the pot.

My personal advise??? Never mistake a throbbing whatchamacallit for a beating heart.

Sorry your experience with marijuana has not been more fruitful than that for you. Your description, however, is not at all consistent with my experience with marijuana.
