I think this is a fine idea, although in our area and many others you will find similar opportunities locally for great buys on subsidized plants. Try checking your forestry service or as I do, with a state department of agriculture extension office. There are free and cheap trees to be had, and if you have room to grow trees it's truly a shame not to do so!
On the previously mentioned topic of trees that are easily damaged, this has been somewhat true of tulip poplars, which are also our state tree here in TN. They tend to have a lot of "v" notches, which are more prone to damage than arches, but they're not too vulnerable once mature.
Overall they're still very beautiful trees that mature quickly and provide a lot of beauty and shade with large broad leafs. Out of quite a few of them that I've raised I did opt to cut one down due to damage, but I still choose them sometimes. Oh! And if you live where winters are cold, consider some evergreen varieties to give color through the bleak months of winter
