I'll pop in with more when I think of them.

Lazy - Ritchie Blackmore/Deep Purple
Highway Star - same
Friday Night in San Francisco - John McLaughlin, Al DiMeola, Paco De Lucia (The entire album is just jaw-droppingly amazing - acoustic guitars should not be so fast!!!)

<< Anyone notice that today's rock songs lack guitar solos? Is it because guitarists today lack the talent or creativity these days? >>

it is because these stupid pseudo punk bands came and gave the false impression to the youth that it is uncool being a guitar virtuoso and cool being stupid ,as some rock legend from yesteryears mentioned..the 90's were " the revenge of the nerds"...where the hell are the guitar gods today...when i say this i hope none of you bring up the over-rated Mr. Tom Morello... . I have nothing against punk music, but they did popularize the notion that it is ok to have bad production, singing and playing as long as you rock and scream hard. The great metallica was afterall a band formed because of punk, progressive and hard rock influences frm the late 70s. the concept of rock band is not there any more. the most famous guy on the band today is with doubt the lead singer.

You young whippersnappers.

Acoustic:

Embryonic Journey- Jorma Kaukonen (Jefferson Airplane) 1:54 of heaven.

pretty much anything Leo Kotke ever did (without singing)

Electric:

Hey Frederick (or almost any other cut off Volunteers by Jefferson Airplane)

Intro/Sweet Jane-Lou Reed live (Rock N Rock Animal)

Phil Manzanera-Diamond Head or 801 Live albums

Neil Young-Cowgirl in the Sand album, Cortez the Killer or Like A Hurricane

Expand your tastes-there's more to music than what mtv plays.

It's kind of passé nowadays. There are solos but they're not the centerpiece of the song. I actually prefer the riffs over the solos, as long as they're implemented well (e.g. 80's REM and U2).

cool that you mentioned Phil Manzanera..i thought he didnt have too many fans.he is one of the most under-rated guitarists in rock....too bad he and ferry parted ways after an excellent album.

I like the solos from Back in black by AC/DC and Smells like teen spirit by Nirvana, and Don't look back by Boston.

OK, Freebird and Boston were already mentioned but I did not see 38 Special - Hold on Loosely....
The rest are covered, good listening and playing , me goes and picks up guitar and fires up old dusty Marshall Amp.

What? What bands are you referring to? And why would it be a "false impression" that it is uncool to be a guitar virtuoso.

What people don't understand is that there are some VERY good guitar players out there that choose not to play epic solos.

Cmon guys, EAGLES - Hotel California (Joe Walsh and Glenn Frey, I think) Both the original & the unplugged version off of the Hell Freezes Over album!

Steve Vai - Blue Powder off of the Passion and Warfare album LISTEN TO THIS! HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!

I definitely second Ozzy/Zakk Wylde - No More Tears

How about some non-rock guitar action:

Al DeMeola - Kiss my Axe

Not in any certain order, just as I think of them:

Master of Puppets - Metallica - Kirk Hammet
One - Metallica - Kirk Hammet
Eruption - Van Halen - Eddie Van Halen
Stairway to Heaven - Led Zeppelin

There's more, just can't think of them right now.

There are repeats but hey, what can I say? If its great, its great.

i agree may be right here.....but these people choose not to play the guitar solos because it isnt the in thing. tell me which guitarist would not want to show his guitar skills in a nice solo....and most of these guitar players have very generic and primitive riffs (ok go ahead and say "its punk" if you want)

true a good riff like the one from still of the night would also be fine.

Okay, Angus Young is a sweet guitarist for sure. He can practically do cartwheels on stage while playing. And the solos he comes up with are great too... Now, for Nirvana... Those have to be the lamest solos ever. They were pretty much only a power chord band and the solos consisted pretty much of 4 notes. I learned how to play pretty much every Nirvana song and solo by ear... Made me think I was "hardcore" Then I tried playing some Angus Young, SRV... very humbling...

Nirvana totally preyed on what was so elegantly put in one Simpsons episode: "Awww c'mon, making teenagers depressed is like shooting fish in a barrel."

how about:

Eric C. - Classical Gas
or
Lindsey Buckingham(Fleetwood Mac) - Big Love <--live, NOT the original.

both of those songs are just mind bogglingly complex. It amazes me that one guy is playing the whole thing.

Freebird - Lynard Skynynard (spelling)

That group actually had 3 guitar players at that time in that song. But solo part is great, both the live and studio versions kick butt.

Pink Floyd - Money

Metallica has tons - live is to die, eye of the beholder, blackened, so many too hard to list

megadeth has a ton as well

nirvana might not have the best solos in terms of diffculty but the rythem of their songs are downright amazing (come as you are, lithium,etc..)

For people who put down nirvana, nirvana made grudge and without them i dont no where we would be today.

Give credit where credit is due and kurt cobain should be regarded as one of the best musicians and songwriters ever.

What about Pink Floyd's Money? That is way better than comfortably numb. Even echoes is great too.

Dire Straits - Sultans of Swing
Pink Floyd - Shine on You Crazy Diamond

Dave Matthews. One of the greatest rhythm guitarists of our time, IMO.
