SpeedStream 2-Port DSL/Cable Router
Only two ports...but throw a couple switches on those ports and you should be set...
CUSA has 5 port switch for $10 too
SpeedStream 5-port 10/100 Ethernet switch
These are both AFTER REBATE deals

According to the compusa site: Linky
$49.99
-$10 instant rebate
-30.00 Mfc Mail in rebate
=$9.99

However, the website is sold out of them so I guess its more like a B&M YMMV deal.. If you can get the deal the after rebate price does seem hot, although I've never heard of this brand so it may be worth the extra loot to avoid the possible hassles..

Anyone have a hot deal on a major brand router?

One problem I found is that it doesn't let you set the MTU to the optimal setting for your type of connection. For example, the ideal MTU setting for my PPPoE DSL connection is 1492. Yet, this router is set at MTU=1412 and there's no way to change it unlike on other routers.

While this router will not permit an MTU setting higher than 1412, it will permit a lower setting. I found 1400 to give better connection speeds than 1412.

Are you setting the MTU through Windows?
I heard the problem with that is that if you have mismatched MTUs for Windows and the router, it will lead to fragmentation. (i.e. Router is trying to send 1412 but the computer is accepting max 1400 and thus the data is fragmented)

Siemens SpeedStream's routers are made by the same OEM manufacturer that makes SMC routers in Taiwan. How do I know?? I have routers from both companies and not only do they look physically identical, but the administrative interface are the same.
Both routers have been running great w/o any problem.
The only downside I see on this router is the WAN port runs only 10Mbps, which isn't fast enough in case your network gets an upgrade in the future. Some newer models have 100Mbs on WAN port.

Cooky,
Do the SMC routers allow you to customize your MTU setting?
If so, maybe I can upgrade my Siemens firmware with an equivalent SMC firmware.

Well, I don't know of any broadband connections that deliver 10Mbps speeds, so I'm not entirely sure what difference that makes. If you need this thing for an internal network, it's gonna be an awfully small network since it's only got 2 ports. You'd prolly wannt use a cheap 100Mpbs switch if you have more than 2 'puters.

I just got this router and installed... NOTHING. The router craps out everytime you try to access the internet. And after trying, I can't even connect to the router without reseting it.

I guess you get what you pay for.... return is on its way CompUSA

If any of have figured out how to get SMC firmware on this router please discuss how. I took the deal, and I am finding that this stupid thing crashes and requires power to be cycled every now and then. I've heard that some people have had perfect experiences with this router. Maybe I should exchange mine? I also hear that SMC routers are among the best. So this problem is hard to figure out. Also if this becomes more OT, we may need to move this to the Networking forum. Thanks for any suggestions.

I've had no issues with this Speedstream router...just don't care for the fact that it doesn't let me optimize my MTU for my type of connection. Apparently, they think 1412 is optimal for PPPoE.

They had no firmware for the Hakins router I purchased so I returned it.

I then went and purchased the 2 port router advertised here and have similar issues as mentioned by the two previous posts with the router crashing. (latest firmware updated too)
