10 seconds to post

Hi guys, first timer. I have an Athlon 2000+ with an Abit KR7A-Raid motherboard. Everytime I bootup, the first beep takes about 10 seconds. Its been that way for about a month now. Never more, never less. I had that cpu in a K7S5A motherboard and it was posting in about a second or two. I have swapped memory modules (currently I have the Mushkin high pref 2-3-3 DDR stick) and the result is the same. I have messed around with the bios a little, using optimal and best performance and the results were still the same. The overall performance seems to be fine. I was just wondering if anyone had a similar experience.

Check your CMOS to see if it's set for quick POST. Also, check to see if your IDE channels are set for your drives or for Auto Detect. Auto can take a little longer. I have my machine set for Auto because I have a pluggable second drive which is only in the system when I back it up using Norton Ghost. It takes a lot longer when the second drive is plugged in.

Yes, I am set to quick post. I problem is right at the outset, waiting for the first beep. I believe the bios looks at the ide devices after the initial beep.

Did you double check to make sure that your IDE drives are all jumpered correctly? master/slave? I used to have a computer that took forever to POST ... I finally figured out the problem was that I had incorrectly jumpered the drives, although the BIOS let it pass.

Also, does your floppy drive work?? On one of the newer systems that I had serviced, I had done an upgrade and had accidentally knocked the power cable to the floppy drive out. When I booted up, the system POSTed for more than 15 seconds, apparently waiting for a response from the floppy drive.

I tried the ide devices. I took off both ide cables on the motherboard, booted a couple of times with no difference. I even tried to take off all my pci cards and that didn't help. I didn't try the agp nvidia card yet, but I probably will soon. I appreciate all the advice. Any more will also be appreciated.

Is your mobo's RAID enabled? Are you using a RAID config? If so, there might be a delay to allow the drives to spin up before the "normal" post operations begin.

I kind of doubt this is the cause, but check the voltage on your CMOS battery. I have had a couple of people's systems I have worked on and when the battery voltage got low, the system would not POST until they turned it on a couple of times. Anyway, check it and maybe that is it.
