10" Tablet recommendation

I have not paid so much attention to the tablet space. I am reading up a bit, but it's difficult to make judgement without spending a lot more time. I think it is just easier to ask:

My main purpose is basically a magazine reader, to replace the small stacks of magazines, with lighter duty for internet and skype. To this end, display (quality + eye-strain factors), battery life, and size/weight are my primary concerns. I am more interested in 10" tablets, to approach "life-like" size for at least National Geographic. I don't have a bias for iPad vs Android.

Based on the above...suggestions?

Thanks!

Nexus 10 is about as good as you'll get. If you want to drop down to 9" the Kindle Fire HD has an outstanding display and a great price ($269 for the 16gb version).

iPad might be too expensive for you. I would think you can't go wrong with either Nexus 7 or 10 and Samsung Note/Tab (all size) they are cheaper.

I can recommend the Nexus 10. It's truly fantastic, amazing screen, thin and light and nice to hold rubber material, and the front-facing stereo speakers are great as well. Android 4.2 and Chrome run very well on it. There seem to be all the magazines you could want on the Play Store, but I would check out what you want ahead of time to be sure.

If you want detail, the Nexus 10 has a 2560 x 1600 (300 ppi) screen. That's a higher resolution than most people's desktop monitor.

A Nook HD+ is 9" and is fairly high-res at 1920x1280.
That makes it a 3:2 aspect ration, so slightly wider than typical 16:9 tablets.
That wider-ness is nice for reading; I'm finding I'm able to read magazines/PDF's on the tablet better than I could on my previous Kindle Fire or even my PC.

It does not have any sort of camera on board, so that is likely a deal-breaker since you won't be able to Skype.

However, it can be found at discount.

I am not in love with Android, I could never get comfortable with the UI. I didn't think iOS would be much better until I learned that it has a few gesture controls for app switching/task bar etc. Coupled with gesture enabled browser, my iPad 4 felt very intuitive to use. Gesture controls are not as good as Windows RT, but pretty damn nice.

I love Android... but I'd go with the iPad 4. It's got a very high resolution display and a very powerful GPU to power it smoothly. And Apple does an outstanding job calibrating the colors (something Google doesn't seem to bother with).

But probably the bigger factor is the apps. The iPad has been dominate in the tablet space for such a long time and it's got so many apps designed specifically for the tablet. I'm still unsatisfied with how many apps look on Android tablets, especially 10 inch tablets.

Nexus 10 is great minus the following issues:
- Somehow the NAND is slow as hell. Do some benchmarks and it sits at the bottom despite doing TRIM to help speed it up. Random writes is dog slow.
- Microphone is on the back and bottom? How the hell does that work? I bought it with the hopes of being able to Skype and Google hangout. Except no one can hear me or it echoes.

Overall it's a decent product, and Android is finally fast enough to use unlike the gen 1 and gen 2 tablets like the Tab 1/Tab 2. I hope next iteration Google steps up. The hardware is great overall, but they just need to polish the thing.

Yes and wtf is with the pogo pins and no dock? The Nexus 4 advertises daydream but that's useless because there's no dock. So unless you want your phone to always daydream when you plug it in usb, the whole dock concept is ridiculous.

Oddly enough my Nexus 10 registers gamma 2.2 across the board. I don't find the colors that punchy compared to my calibrated Nexus 4, but it's a hell of a lot better than the stock Nexus 4 colors...
