So today marks the 10 year anniversary of my favorite console, the Sega Dreamcast. So what comes to mind when you hear of it?
For me I'll always remember the first time I played NFL2k. Easily the biggest leap forward in a sports title I can think of. Ikaruga is also one of the first games I think of as well.

Soul Calibur, Power Stone, Phantasy Star Online, full mouse and keyboard support, tons of online games, web browser, rumble pack that didn't need batteries, pressure sensitive L and R triggers, joystick that didn't die over time like the N64 one did. Good stuff.

I think the Dreamcast is probably my favorite system ever, just barely nudging out the N64/SNES/NES. I think more things in modern consoles can be traced to it than possibly any other.

Its strange, I hate so many things about the Wii's addons, but I liked them with the Dreamcast. The VMUs were completely impractical (awful battery life with relatively difficult to locate batteries), but they were charming.

It wasn't a big multi-player system for me oddly enough, I think House of the Dead 2 was the only one. I loved that game, even though it was short was pretty repetitive, and the crappy off-brand lightguns we got stuck with because Sega wouldn't localise their own, sucked, but it was still a blast with two players (I think we had fun even when playing with the regular controllers). I played the crap out of TXR2 in the dearth of time between Gran Turismos.

I liked Sonic although there was plenty about it that wasn't that good (the big stupid cat with the fishing thing). Record of Lodoss War was a decent dungeon crawler, although no co-op sucked. At the time, I hated fighting games for some reason, and never got into Soul Calibur although I could see why it was highly rated. I'm trying to remember other games that I played. I really did not play all that many and missed plenty of the really good ones. Oh yeah, I remember really wanting to play Shadowman for some reason, and went on a big trip to track down a copy on a Sunday. I barely made it anywhere in that game and got stuck with no idea where I was supposed to go next. Oh, I remember the 2nd Vigilante 8, that was probably the only other game I really played multiplayer on it.

Looking at list of games now. Crazy Taxi! Played that a ton, swapping turns so I guess it was sorta multiplayer. Shenmue was both really silly/stupid and amazing at the same time. It had such potential, too bad they spent so much time putting a billion pointless vending machine/store things. And I forgot Code Veronica. I got stuck at the end of the first disc and I think had to cheat my way past. The knife was pretty overpowered, well somewhat, but the guns were just way to ineffective, and it took the RE story places that, well I don't really know where they're going with the RE overall storyline as they just keep adding fucked up stuff with each game past 2.

Played Shenmue II (barely), Phantasy Star Online, Skies of Arcadia, and Ikaruga later (Xbox, GC, GC). Didn't get into Dead or Alive until 3 on the Xbox, but 2 is where the franchise really seemed to take off.

Blah, ok, I don't know why I completely ignored NFL2K. It was one of the games I bought the system for (big wow factor).

Really, I don't know why I'm so fond of it, as at best, I'd say the games I played on it were maybe 8.5s. NFL2K probably a 9 since it really pushed things forward, but pretty much all of the games I played had some significant deductions. I think they hit that sweet spot between really great and mediocre, like that band you really dug in high school and still listen to fondly but you know they're not really all that good but you still love it anyways.

Easily my favorite system ever.

I just remember sneaking downstairs at night to play it without my parents knowing, and bumping into my brother trying to get a crack at it too. Re-playing through the beginning of Sonic Adventure almost every day because we couldn't afford to buy a VMU, and that day I used up all my play time for a week just to get to Big and stopping. Then, the countless replays of the demo disc and the great games that came on it, among which was the best fighting game I have played, Powerstone.

9/9/09. Dreamcast 2 will be announced.

I sold off 3 beanie babies (for $500, as an 11 year old, I was filthy rich)...bought the console, extra controller, VMU, Blitz, and Sonic. Ranks #2 only behind my mom spontaneously deciding to go out and buy a SNES when I was in kindergarden as the greatest purchase experience

Loved NFL 2k5, Soul Caliber, Crazy Taxi, and the greatest game of all time: NBA Showtime which I still play from time to time. Then figuring out how to do all the 'mods' (ROMS, Media players, burned games) gave new life to the console.

Yeh i was just thinking about the 10 year anniversary.
The Dreamcast was probably my favorite console next to the Genesis, so many good games.
My original 9/9/99 dreamcast is actually in my closet collecting dust, maybe ill dust it off and play a few games in celebration heh.

I'm just impressed that so many of those consoles still work, considering the lifespan of consoles like the 360...not that I don't love mine

I still play NFL 2k4 and 2k5 on the original Xbox. Those games had a tactile quality to them that Madden sorely, pathetically still lacks.

I still have two.
I just loved that they played backups and games from other regions without needing modifications.
One of my favorite systems ever!

Crazy Taxi... Not that it was that great of a game in retrospect, but that was the one I associated with the DC..

One of my freinds had one and he never played it so he just gave it to me and 3 controllers a couple years ago. I downloaded a bunch of games. It's a pretty neat little console. You can still play online with some games with a dialup connection. I played 4x4 Evo online against people who were playing the PC version. They try to talk to you but it takes forever to type with the gamepad so there are some preset chat messages like "YOU try typing with a gamepad!" . It was pretty cool though and impressive that it still works. Online gaming, internet browser, true real VGA video output, CD player function, 60fps 640x480 in nearly every game, 4 controllers. It's a shame it didn't get really popular. From a hardware standpoint, I think it had everything going for it.

Then today is the 10th anniversary of the day I strolled into CompUSA, bought the DC + NFL2k + Soul Calibur, and spent the entire night playing NFL2k with friends and went straight to work the next morning after finishing our last game.

I agree with someone's comment above that it was easily the biggest leap forward for a game genre ever. It was so far above any other football game at that time. I sadly miss the NFL2K series. I picked up Madden 10 this year, and gave up on it after a couple weeks. It's just nowhere near as fun to me. Stupid NFL and their monopoly licenses (I curse thee NFL, EA, and DirecTV!!)

Soulcaliber! my favorite arcade game. DC was a system that could've gone somewhere far.

I never got the DC as I was a PC gamer, so I didn't really care too much about it. I almost bought it as a gift for my brother. Good thing I didn't, he's a big jerk now, LOL. Hmmm...maybe the DC could've changed his life and he wouldn't be a jerk?

I always felt the Dreamcast lost out to the two Playstations of that era because of the games it had. Sega was always the master of arcade games, and the best games on the system were the likes of Crazy Taxi, Soul Calibur. . .stuff that you could really play for more than an hour without getting bored. Playstation on the other hand was swallowing your gaming life with big games like Final Fantasy that you could lose hours and hours on. Maybe I just had the wrong games?

The biggest gift the Dreamcast gave us was the fact that is was sort of a proto-XBox. Microsoft's first console involvement, virtually identical controllers, and a lot of games carried over with sequels (MSR -> Project Gotham, Jet Set Radio, etc)

Spaaaaaace Channel-5 =)

My DC is collecting dust in the basement. I should fire it up to see if it still works!

Yes. There were some great RPGs on the Dreamcast like Skies of Arcadia, Grandia II, Phantasy Star Online, Shenmue I & II, etc. What killed it was no EA support, a lack of money, and PS2 hype.

I loved Skies of Arcadia, and Soul Calibur on the Dreamcast. I also had the fishing controller, which was super fun with Sega Marine Fishing. Another cool thing was Bleem, which was a Playstation emulator for the Dreamcast. I used that to play Gran Turismo 2 because I didn't have a PS1.

Crazy Taxi was the first game I played on it, and I was sold. Lots of time on Soul Calibur too. Matches could get very heated.
But Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 2 probably spent more time in it than any other game. Used to start it up while watching TV, then switch inputs as soon as a commercial came on, because it gave you just enough time for a two minute run
