This is not a parody, but I thought we should have a thread to log members' walking and running progress in addition to the pushups. I know we have a number of runners on the forum.

Post any mileage you log walking (brisk walking for fitness; not casually walking down the street) or running, including warmups, training and races.

I figured 10,000 miles would be a bit ambitious, so let's start with 1000.

I ran 7 miles last night.

Total: 7

____________________________________________________________________________

Update 09/03/28:

We have reached the original 1000 miles in 25 days! Congratulations everyone!

Next goal: 10,000 miles!

Sub-goal: Can we make it to 2000 miles in less than 25 days?

____________________________________________________________________________

Update 09/04/12:

We reached 2000 miles only 15 days after reaching 1000! Well done!

Onwards to 10,000 miles!

Update 09/09/12:

We have reached 10,000 miles! Great job everyone!

Next up, per allies request, 25,000 miles!

Update 10/08/30:

We have reached 25,000 miles!

Onwards to 50,000!

As soon as my hip heals and I can run again, or I become impatient and run anyway, I'm in.

You guys are lucky I'm not in my full-fledged marathon training right now... 1000 miles would not take very long if so! I will update the total after my run today.

What's your weekly mileage during marathon training mode? I'm trying to get up to 45 miles per week to get ready for my 15 mile trail race in May.

Previously I maxed out at 85. I'd like to hit 100 this year. 45mpw is a good level; it's enough to get you in shape but not so much that your body is constantly worn down. By the way, I did 6 miles so that brings the total to 71. I just started running again after taking 6 weeks off due to an injury so I'm only ~30mpw right now...

That is an insane amount of mileage. I'd really like to get better at the marathon, but probably won't do another one until the end of the year. (Doing one more late April) Some people are just naturally better - my good friend ran a 3:32 in his first, and that was half assing it. I was blown away when he told me he ran it that fast.

I wouldn't say insane, but 85-100 is solid mileage for the marathon (although some of my running friends who went to NCAA schools ran this type of mileage as middle distance runners - mile/5000m). The world class marathoners peak around 130-150 miles per week.

Personally, I am pretty fragile above 65-70 miles per week, so that's where I plan to cap. 45 miles is the minimum needed to run a good marathon.

If you only do LSD running in your training, that may be true. However, many people are finding that much shorter bouts of training allow you to succeed at endurance events with far less weekly mileage (and far less time spent exercising in general). You may want to read the material and watch the videos on Crossfit Endurance, FAQ on Endurance Training and read some testimonials on the CF messageboard, such this thread on marathon training and this thread on ultra-marathon training (I especially like the guy who ran a 50 miler despite running less than 20 miles per week).

Sorry, I should clarify - that mileage includes tempo runs and hill workouts as well as steady runs. I am well aware that LSD is not the ideal training method for runners.

This CrossFit Endurance program looks interesting - I may try it out on a subsequent race. I have recently added strength/core conditioning and some plyometrics to my routine to add strength and flexibility and hopefully reduce the possibility of getting injured.

However, from reading the thread you linked, and some related ones, there are some CrossFitters who found that they performed better on slightly more mileage. As well, while many people mentioned marathon PRs, I didn't see any faster than about 3:30. I don't doubt that the program is great for overall fitness, but it may not be conducive to running the fastest marathon I'm capable of, which is my goal.

The basic Crossfit program (from the Crossfit mainsite) is aimed at developing general physical preparedness (GPP), or overall, general fitness. Marathon running is obviously a very very specialized form of fitness, so the fact that a CFer can do a marathon with little to no extra training is a pretty good sign of how effective this "generalist" program can be.

However, an elite marathon time is an even more specialized goal and to achieve it, a GPP program alone won't be enough. This is where CF Endurance comes into play, which is a version of CF biased towards endurance/stamina training. I've only skimmed the thread, but my guess is that most of the people in it do regular CF, not CF endurance, which is why you didn't see a time faster than 3:30. Give CF endurance a try and if you need more info/convincing, ask around the CF forums or email the folks at CF endurance.
