did 10 miles on Tuesday, then actually did not run on Wednesday. Life got in the way; this is the first day since July 15th. Today I did 16 miles with 6x 1 mile in 5:32 average. Half marathon on Sunday whoo!

10 miles today on the Greenway trail in my Minimi. Saw a lonely raccoon shuffling along the trail; luckily he waddled off when I yelled at him and didn't try to rip my jugular out.

Adam and I saw a porcupine a few days ago. That was pretty cool. Coons are everywhere down here...

13 miles today in new adidas trail shoes. Not too bad. The trails were muddy and there were freshly toppled trees from the tropical storm last week to make it more exciting than normal. Race 3 weeks from today and I feel more ready for this one than any other before. Shooting for less than 12 hours, the average 50 mile finish time is 14 hours.

Easy 8 this morning. First 3 with Tiffany and Adam at a leisurely pace, last 5 a bit quicker. The new adidas are good on flat hardpacked dirt trails, too. They should do fine at Virgil in less than 3 weeks.

did 6 miles on Saturday and 23 total yesterday. Ran the Oak Tree half marathon and would have won, except this year a local stud who just graduated college showed up and ran 5:17 pace to shatter the course record by almost 4 minutes!! This is an absolutely brutal course (I averaged 6:10s and had a couple 6:30s and even a 7:00 mile in there!) and this kid went and ran 1:09:09 and beat me by 12 freaking minutes!! Talk about a humbling experience! It was impressive to watch him run (for the few minutes I could see him) though. What a beast! Turns out he was a national-caliber D3 athlete who has run 14:30 for the 5K and 30:30 for the 10K, so I guess if I'm going to get beat, it might as well be by an animal like him!

All that being said, you totally ran like an animal Scorch, great work. I hope I can turn in results half as good later this month.

No running today, it's way too wet out. Training plan calls for a rest today anyways. Week 1 of taper with volume down by 20%. I'm hating it already.

Thanks Mega. I was pleased with how my race turned out, so I won't complain! Sorry about the taper; that's never any fun! Its good for you though and you'll need to be well-rested so you can run sub-12 in a few weeks!

I did two easy 6 mile runs on trails today to try to recover from yesterday. My quads don't really like me today.

Noticed something interesting? with my forerunner 305.
My distance counter was sitting at 900m after my warm up and then I started stretching. I must have moved 10m at most...lets say 15m to be generous. When I was done stretching the distance counter was sitting at 978m! (it is now the 2nd time I notice it).

So makes me wonder if it is constantly overstating my distance...hmm. Anyone else noticed something similar?

my garmin 305 and runkeeper app on my iphone 3GS are always off. Depending on the route, it's sometimes off by as much as 0.20 miles.

wayliff: that's because GPS are only accurate to within 10m. So, if you have it running still when you're not moving, the signal that it gets from you can bounce around in a 10m radius. So one signal might come from 10m to the east of you, then another one might be 10m to the west, so it thinks you moved 20m. Furthermore, when you are moving, the 10m accuracy is only about 95%, so chances are your GPS is at least a few percentage points off from the true distance. It could be either over- or under-estimating the mileage, depending on a lot of factors. If you ever run a race with a certified course and wear a GPS, you will usually notice that the GPS is off by a few tenths of a mile and the mile markers don't line up because of GPS are inherently less than 100% accurate. They're still close enough that it doesn't really make that much of a difference; if it says you ran 4 miles and you really ran 3.97, your body can't tell that you shorted it.
