Sounds like you did well! Good job. Glad to hear the training was paying off on the final hill.
Re the "barely any room for passing" part, this isn't the first time I've read this about trail races. That would be incredibly frustrating for me, and that's part of the reason I don't do bigger road races which don't have wave starts. Few people really observe race etiquette these days, and I can't tell you the number of times I've been stuck behind 4 runners who are walking and chatting 4-across in the first mile of a 10K or half marathon yet who lined up with the 7 minute/mile crowd. It seems like the logjam problem would be much worse in trail races where there's so much less room to pass. I remember similar situations back when I used to race mt. bikes, and there was very little passing on tight courses.

Luckily there was none of that. It was a fast field I noticed more than a few college cross country runners in the crowd, I finished 110/336. My time was 1:00.37. But that is the other thing, not a huge field, and they did 2 waves, 'fast runners' then about 30-40 seconds later 'slow runners(which is me),' so passing wasn't too horrible, and everyone I noticed was polite about it, myself included.
While the tiny passing lanes suck, when you have a smaller field of more dedicated runners it makes for an easier race day. Aside from the 2 Tough Mudders and one Warrior Dash(both kinda for giggles at this point) I refuse to enter really large races. The trail half marathon I'm running in August is capped at 500 runners.
Come to think of it I entered the Iron Warrior Dash which is much longer(15.6miles) and has more of a running component then most obstacle course races, it was capped at 500 runners as well so even that won't be bad.
