Trail Half Marathon tomorrow. Weather looks to be about perfect 63F with 80% humidity at start time.

5 miles around the mall in DC today. I have never been in a city with so many runners before.

Well that was just about the most perfect race I've ran all year.

Goal was for under 2:12 for me. Finished in 2:09:30!!!! 8th in my age group, 192nd out of 450 overall. When I passed the 12 mile mark with 2:00:10 showing on my watch I went all out to get under 2:10. Last 1.1 miles I was going at 8:30min/mile pace. I think my hydration strategy helped with that. Winning time was 1:23:40.

Not bad for my first ever half marathon! And on a trail to boot.

Few races notes...the race is called The Legend Half Marathon in Sleepy Hollow State Park...and the weather helped with the theme it was 58F with almost 100% RH at start time, which meant lots of fog and a damp course initially.

Course was not too technical, roots and sand were the main hazards throughout, but a good 4 miles of the course including the last 2 miles were on relatively flat open prairie. 3 of the hills were essentially full scramble hills like 20-25% grade with roots and loose gravel. Thankfully they weren't very big only like 100ft in elevation change.

I half fell at mile 10.5, stumbled on a hidden root in the grass. Followed a pretty strict food and hydration strategy. Had 3 GUs and about 12 of the little 20 cal gatorade chews and 2 chunks of beef jerky. Drank 60 oz of half water/gatorade mix and never felt bad/nauseated/hitting the wall.

That being said, most of the people on the course didn't even have water bottles with them. As a ER nurse it makes me shake my head, sure it was cool at start time but it was damn humid, and by mile 8 or so it had shot into the mid 70s but the humidity was still quite high. Speaking as a nurse and not a runner for a moment, that's a recipe for disaster and it is just horrible(and definitely dangerous) for you. There is nothing wrong with eating or drinking while running. The winner of the whole thing had a camelbak hydration pack on FFS. Use common sense out there people!

Great job TraumaRN!

7.3 miles this morning, ran around the lake. Got up early enough that I didn't roast.

5.5 miles this morning, negative half mile splits.

Nice job TraumaRN. Not sure I will even get to 13.1, that is a nice accomplishment.

Great job, Trauma! Way to go! Next stop is the marathon, and maybe beyond (into Mega's and Batelur's world of pain, for the people for whom 26.2 just isn't far enough! ).

Was the race unsupported (no water stations)? I'm just curious why you ran with your hydration pack. I'm totally in agreement with you about the need to stay nourished and hydrated (especially hydrated) during any endurance event, but one of the things I LOVE about a supported event is not having to wear a bottle belt or hydration pack - every event I've done has had a water stop every 1.5-2 miles. Thank you, volunteers!

Of course you can, if you want to do it. You're already doing 5+, so getting to 13 isn't too tough. If I can do it, most anyone can.

It had 3 aid stations. At miles 3, 6, 9, passing out water and gatorade and at mile 6 GU pouchs. I ran with just one of my nathan handhelds that has a small pocket for food because of the weather forecast and knowing the course. Like I said it was super humid and warmed up really fast, no wind, and about 4 miles of the course were wide open grass fields with zero shade. I think it caught people off guard...The medic tent at the end was quite busy.

Moreover as an ER nurse I believe in proper hydration no matter what. It is common sense to me.

And to answer something you mentioned, I'm going to run a 50 mile ultra next April.

I've had to learn that one the hard way. No so much the hydration issue, but respecting the conditions, especially the heat. Last year, my second half ever was 80 at the start at 7AM, with humidity at 80+ too - absolutely brutal conditions. I figured since the course was pancake flat, I could PR the race regardless of the weather, so I started out with the 1:45 pace group and promptly blew up in spectacular fashion by Mile 3. I was just struggling to finish for the next 10 miles. I was drinking two cups at every water stop, but I was overheating and pretty spent the whole way. Not my smartest race.

Damn Skippy! Good luck!

My problem is just keeping my legs healthy. It seems like every time I get to doing regular runs of 7-8 miles something breaks and then I am back to doing 3-5 mile runs like I am now. Part of me thinks just being the best 5k-10k runner I can is where I am destined to be (which is OK too, it beats sitting on the couch). I have a lot of respect for you guys that can do the longer distances (my wife being one of those people too).
