My problem is just keeping my legs healthy. It seems like every time I get to doing regular runs of 7-8 miles something breaks and then I am back to doing 3-5 mile runs like I am now. Part of me thinks just being the best 5k-10k runner I can is where I am destined to be (which is OK too, it beats sitting on the couch). I have a lot of respect for you guys that can do the longer distances (my wife being one of those people too).

Sorry to hear about that. I've been lucky about injuries - I've had a few minor strains here and there, but never anything serious. Are you being careful to ramp up your mileage slowly? That's all the useful help I can think of right now.

Felt so so awful this morning. Super nauseated and stomach cramps. Gutted out those 4 miles. Figure its good ultra practice for when your body starts to rebel.

I am getting in on this. I started 3 months ago with couch to 5k. My first 5k race is a week away. 3 miles this morning.

+5 miles.

FINALLY found a trail close to me with unpaved trails and a decent amount of hill work that is only a 10 minute drive from my house. So 5 miles of trails and hills today.

Nice. I have to drive 20 mins and pay to get into the trails close to my house, and the hours are limited.

Mursilis, what is track etiquette? I've never run on a track so I'm curious.

I'm guessing the rules like my track has. Runners stay to the inside lanes, walkers to the outside. Or more basically slow people to the outside fast folks stay to the inside.

This. Plus, none of the following, ALL of which I encountered last night:

Kids riding bikes in random circles all over the track. So dangerous and so many close calls!

Kids riding skateboards in the opposite direction of every single runner/walker at the track (and being followed by an idiot father also walking against the flow and not correcting his kids).

Parents standing right in the middle of the track watching the soccer practice going on in the infield, when there are bleachers to sit in and plenty of empty, open space also available for standing which doesn't involve blocking the track at least 10+ people are clearly using.

The idiot soccer coach who decides to huddle up her team for a meeting right in the middle of the track when there were plenty of other options (see above).

The same idiot coach who has her team leave their gear bags all over the track when other empty space was available.

People crossing the track without looking in any direction.

And on and on and on . . . And all these behaviors are common at the track, unfortunately.

Basically, IMHO, "track etiquette" just comes down to having a little respect for others, such that you don't try to disrupt what they're trying to do with stupid, selfish behavior. Such respect seems to be in short supply these days. Normally, I hate using the track, but my daughter was practicing at the field, so I needed to stick around while still getting some miles in. So insanely frustrating. Common courtesy is so uncommon these days.

Wow, that's all common sense kind of stuff. I guess I'd avoid the track that being the norm you encounter there.

Part of the reason I run at like 9 or 10 am is because I can avoid any idiots on the track at those times

I'm feeling particularly lucky to have paved urban trails to run on .5 miles from my house. I just run to the "trail" and then have at. The only dangers I face are the Tour de France wannabes that terrorize the trails.

It just depends on the track, and the time of day. Unfortunately, this track is in a not-so-great neighborhood, and in the early evenings when various youth sports teams are practicing is the worst - lots of families coming out for soccer practices or pick-up soccer games, and they think nothing of letting the little ones wander all over the track. Plus, I'm usually the only runner - the rest are usually walkers. Running must not be a "serious" sport in Hispanic culture, because they usually look at me most of the time like some kind of nut - why's this person just running in circles? Some tracks are better, and I'll drive to those, but only if I'm doing a structured speed workout or running with other, slower people. Otherwise, I just find them too dull - probably the same reason you avoid them and hit the trails. Better scenery.

Back when I raced bikes, I avoided paved trails, as did most racers. A strong cyclist can easily hold 20MPH+ on the flats and exceed 30 on most downhill stretches, and doing that sort of speed alongside 2-3MPH walkers was a recipe for disaster. I knew plenty of roads that either had wide shoulders or sparse traffic, and stuck to those.

Plenty of Hispanics run around here, but then again I'm in FL so it's to be expected. And I wish the bikers around here had your sense of decency. You are right, they fly by and scare the living shit out of me. Some announce, most do not. And there have been collisions, just not me yet.
