Today I just did an easy 10. About a mile in, a girl turned onto the road ahead of me, and she was going pretty quick. Maybe just a hair slower than me. Like, if I was doing a 7:00.00 mile, she was doing a 7:00.5. Then she stopped and tied her shoe and I caught up to her so when she started running I was maybe 10m behind her. She was going exactly my pace now and I couldn't but notice that she had really nice legs and a nice ass. But I didn't want her to think I was a creep so I sped up and passed her and said hi. But now of course, I can't pass her and then slow back down; what if she speeds up and passes me back? That would be awkward. So I kept a faster pace until I turned off that road and she kept going, but dang, she was quick! I know pretty much all the fast girls in this area, but I didn't recognize her. I'll have to keep an eye out for her at the races. Any girl that can do 7-flats has to be pretty quick! Anyway, now that story time is over, this brings us to 6984

Cheers, man.

 You mean you're not even in marathon training mode yet? Great job on the mileage so far!

I don't see too many fast younger women in my area, but there's one woman who does her Sunday runs on the same lake trail I do. Depending what time I do my run, I'll see her out there in a sports bra and shorts, with ridiculously ripped abs and shoulders. One time I was running in the same direction around the lake and it took a looong time to reel her in.

Saw her later at the Vancouver Marathon, racking up the awards. She was the 3rd overall woman in 2:56 (only 6 min behind me!) and she won the 45-49 age group. Good lord she's fast, and she looks really good for someone that age!

No joke, track intervals are probably the hardest workout you can do. I was dry-heaving and my legs felt like jello by the end but miraculously I was feeling much better after the cooldown.

Well, on the bright side, if I had ran those at the pace I ran my 5K at, it would have been 3:35s. So, even though consistency was bad, (almost) every one was way faster than my 5K pace. Which probably doesn't say anything meaningful except that I'm a beginner. But hey, I'm having fun.

So you are supposed to run the intervals at a consistent pace, not a consistent effort?

+8 hilly miles today.

Hey, I absolutely agree that having fun is the main reason for doing these workouts, and I'm glad you're enjoying yourself! I'm only trying to be helpful.

Interval work, fartleks and tempo running are difficult when you're a beginner, in the "training to train" phase. It's tough to judge your pace and make adjustments, but this comes in time.

You mention that 3:35 is about your 5k pace. Perfect - so next time, try doing the first repeat in about 3:40, then try to replicate that same pace on the following repeats. It is about trying to have a consistent pace. In terms of effort, the first repeat should be the easiest, the last one almost as easy, and the second-last one will be a bit tougher than all of them. (This mirrors most races shorter than the marathon, where approximately the 3/4 mark is the toughest part of the race, and requires the most effort.)

The goal is to be as consistent as possible and not vary more than about 1-2 seconds per lap. When you're starting out though, it's Ok to have a bit more variation than that. Also, give yourself 3 minutes recovery between reps, for now.

7 miles at race pace (5:58, 5:54, 6:11. 6:08, 5:45, 5:47, 5:58). I was more controlled on the first mile than in previous workouts, which is good, but I could still start a bit slower.

11 miles total including warmup and cooldown.

 We're over 7000 now!

easy 10 today after a long day at Six Flags Darien Lake with the girl and her little sister. Good times. Even 80 miles for the week. 7034

That's awesome Scorch. Tomorrow marks the end of my rest period, I'm going to do a medium distance run, 12 to 15 miles. I'm just not sure if I'm gonna do trails or roads...

I'm not going to spoil it for anyone, but I watched an ATer do a triathlon today. He kicked ass is all I'm gonna say.

I find myself with less and less time to post but excited we're nearing 10K. (Sort of)

9 + 4 + 3 + 3 + 3 + 15K yest = 29

7072

The heat has been killing my confidence lately - I've barely been able to get to 5 before feeling wiped. Started off probably a bit too cautiously and spent the last 5K leg playing catch up. (I ran/executed well if it was a half marathon, but I didn't pull the trigger soon enough since it was a 15K)

Hope your run went well Mega! I did 14 today with 6 in the middle at marathon pace in 38 minutes. I originally wanted 16 but my legs were tired after the MP section so I plodded home and did some abs instead. 7098

My run did go well, but not as I planned. Due to watching the Musselman Tri yesterday I decided to get back to doing some tri oriented workouts. So today I did a BRick. 15 miles on the bike at almost 20mph and a 5 mile run afterwards at 7:40/mile pace! That's my best BRick ever and I am very psyched to see that my short distance fitness is as good as my long distance fitness.

Scorch, which marathon are you training for?

Solid pacing there, Scorch! And Mega - it looks like a few rest days really paid off!

10 miles this morning (end of a down week for me).

Yeah, it did. I feel pretty good about my fitness. I'm going to do 50 miles this week and see how it goes.

When I ran my marathon in May, half-way thru it I developed pain in my achilles. It has progressively gotten worse, developing into a tendinitis and the reason why I haven't been running and adding to the mileage here. It sucks! With the new dog, I've been doing a lot of walking which actually causes more pain than running. But if I run more than 6 miles, it really hurts for a few days. I've tried different shoes and running barefoot with no success.

So, I have stopped running and have been doing eccentric heel drops to build-up the achilles tendon. After having ruptured the other one back in college, I'm in no mood to develop a knot and have this one rupture. It sucks b/c I want to sign-up for some races this fall and if I do, would need to start training soon.

It feels good today and I want to run but I think I should give it another weeks rest. Reading all of your reports gets me depressed.

I had to abort my planned run for today. Just before leaving work I cut my forehead open. Boss and wife say I should have gotten stitches but it stopped bleeding on it's own within a few minutes. Triple antibiotic and a band-aid seemed to work to me.

I'll go for it tomorrow instead barring the unforeseen.

Mega, I'm training for the Marine Corps Marathon on October 25th. How the heck did you slice your forehead open??? Good call on aborting the run; wouldn't want blood squirting out of your noggin while you're jogging down the trail; it's bad etiquette to bleed profusely on other runners. If its that bad, make sure to take it easy; don't want to bust it open again.

I did 10 miles with 5 of them barefoot on the grass. Felt tired and slow at first but saw a friend of mine running on the soccer fields too so we ran together and picked up the pace a bit for those miles. Think I'm gonna stick myself tonight though; my hammies are not too happy with me right now. 7138

Stupidly decided to run tonight. My achilles hurt the whole run. Stretching and doing heel drops afterwards makes it feel a whole lot better now.

Cap'n, back in Jan of 2008 I had problems with my achilles. I had to take steroids and rest from running for a month. I wasn't as much into running then, but it was lousy to have to sit out. Just do the right thing and heal up man, you know what it's like to blow out your achilles...
