Woah - I'm out of town without Internet access for a few days and all of a sudden Mega is out ripping off 21 milers and Scorch is nipping at my heels for the 800 repeats! Good work guys!

I was away in Sechelt on the Sunshine Coast in BC. It was beautiful, sunny and hot (about 90 degrees). I managed to get both my weekend runs in but the roads there are ridonkulously hilly so I cut them a bit shorter and went more for effort on Saturday and time on Sunday.

Saturday - 10 miles including 50 minutes at race pace (effort)
Sunday - 15 miles

I wouldn't call it ripping (took me 3.5 hours) but yeah I did it. The hills I had to do that day were silly for the distance I was attempting so next time I'm taking a flatter route.

My son only did 17 miles and he could not finish even by walking. An elderly couple felt so bad for him that they stopped and picked him up. He wound up getting home an hour before me, I was so jealous.

IB, what's your next event? You're working hard, there's gotta be a big race on the horizon...

Well, 21 miles is nothing to sneeze at, no matter what pace. Good for your son to get 17 in; that's pretty solid even if he couldn't go quite as far as you.

I know what you mean about too many hills on long runs - no fun. Whenever possible I try to keep the hills to only hill training days and shorter runs.

This is another hard week for me, then I taper next week and race a half marathon on August 9. I'm pretty excited as I've had a breakthrough but I really don't know what sort of pace I can hold. I just want to make sure I go out easy enough that I can negative split.

Any shorter races for you before the "big one" in October?

Yep, on Aug. 16th there is a 30k race that my son and I are doing. It's a trail runners vs. road runners race, not sure how that's gonna work but it sounds like fun.

I need to sign up for another race, maybe a 10 or 15K? What is a good way to find out what races are coming up in my area?

+6 miles today.

yelo, active.com and runnersworld are two ways I find races. I also found the local runners club and they had a schedule of events. One more resource would be your local running specialty store. Fleet Feet Sports sponsors lots of events in my area and when I bought my newest shoes I got a sweet calendar (poster sized) to put on my fridge.

With those tools you should be able to find plenty of opportunities to race.

I slacked off tonight and rode my bike instead. I had some soreness and tightness on the front of my shin, whatever that muscle is called. 20 miles at 21mph, it was a sweet ride, albeit short.

That sounds pretty sweet. From what I've experienced, they're definitely two different disciplines within the same sport, so it should be an interesting race.

Today I was supposed to do 2x 4 miles @ MP. I actually felt really really good though, and ran with my fast friend D, so we ended up running each leg in about 25 minutes, or about a minute faster than I had planned. Coupled with 3 miles up and 3 miles down and a half mile recovery, that gives me a sweet 14.5 miles for the day. Adding the half mile I rounded down from Sunday to give me 15 for 7523

After my recovery from my mountain trip and busy-ness at work, I finally got out for a very short run this afternoon. It's too freaking hot to go far so I just put in 1 mile down to the pool.

2 miles today, 2 miles from monday too. I bought some nice running socks and they made a world of difference when running today. How the hell have I not figured that out before?

Pansy . j/k

I just converted our weather data to Fahrenheit, and it's been around 90 for the last week or so. It hit 92 today (95 with the humidex) :Q. Pretty toasty for these parts. I'm drinking over 4 litres of fluids a day to compensate for the heat.

I ran 9 miles steady tonight, and it actually felt better than the 7.5 yesterday. I think it's because speed/tempo work becomes a lot harder than distance in the heat and humidity. By the time I get acclimatized, we'll probably be back to normal temperatures and I'll be freezing my ass off .

Also I forgot the vaseline tonight, and with all the sweating, I have a savage groin rash. Just thought I'd share LOL.

I typically only get that on my long runs and usually my taint gets the worst of it.

ps - Dick's Sporting Goods doesn't carry Bodyglide and they are the biggest athletic outfitter in my area. Am I going to have to buy this stuff online?

Neither does sports authority apparently.

What was interesting is that when my son and I were asking the salesman about it (and salt tabs) he KNEW what the stuff was but was unable to sell us any. So they employ some knowledgeable salespeople but fail to employ knowledgeable inventory specialists.

I'll just get some from an online triathlon outfitter I guess.
