Nice run, Mega! You are truly becoming formidable! I did 12 miles today on the trails of Mendon Ponds. Felt all right, although my legs are quite tired. I suppose that's to be expected, however. 7750

I don't know about formidable, but it was a good run. I wish they all felt like that one.

How many miles you going for this week? I am aiming at 40 this week and then next to nothing until August 16, my next race. I hate tapering but I want to do well on this one.

I DO NOT miss the heat of the DFW area RB. I did all my running early in the morning or after sunset during the summer when I lived there. You're one tough guy.

I'm not the one killing it with the best runs of his life like you are though! It's part of a thing called TNT - Tues Night Track that they've had here for 10+ years. I'm not a fan of running in the heat but it's a killer workout

If you can do it in the heat you can do it anywhere, keep up the awesome work. Seriously.

I just did 12 on the trails. The deerflies weren't of plague proportions today but the ones that were there were horribly annoying. I had to take off my shirt and wave it around my head to keep them off of me. Just 2 more 8 milers this week and I'm done, aside from one or two 5k jogs I'm gonna do to stay limber and loose. I hate tapering.

 Awesome run the other day Megatomic! Sounds like you're just where you want to be heading into your taper.

Nice easy 3 this morning + pretty rough 6 hill repeats in 101 degree weather. That was rough.

RB - I think you have me beat for the tough guy of the month award. Hard workouts in that kind of heat are pretty rough but they do make you strong.

Had a killer workout last night.

6x800m on the track with 2 minutes recovery (2:31, 2:31, 2:31, 2:31, 2:32, 2:32). It was easily my most consistent workout of the year and also the fastest. My legs were like jelly by the fourth one but I managed to hold on without straining.

Three weeks ago I averaged 2:35 for only 5 reps; last night I added a rep and dropped my average by 4 seconds!

I'm now tapering for my half marathon on Sunday and I am giddy as a schoolgirl to find out what kind of race I'm capable of .

With the warmup and cooldown, 7 miles total. 7781

Dang, IB, those are crazy fast!! Good luck in your race!!

I did a progression run today. Wanted to do 8 miles, starting at 7:00 and dropping 10 seconds per mile, but the loop I ran, which is advertised as 1.2, is really more like 1.1, and messed me up since my splits were not what I was expecting, and I couldn't go as fast as I wanted, so I only did 6 loops. Did 3 up and 4.5 down so I still have 14 for the day though. 7795

Megatomic: yep, tons of them. I think there's over 700 burning right now. None are near Vancouver, but I am in the interior visiting my inlaws. It's basically desert and 100+ degrees every day. It makes for fantastic wine country but fires go like crazy here. It just always smells like campfire these days and the smoke can get pretty bad at times too. No soot on the house here though.

Thanks Scorch, it was a hell of a workout for me. When do you race next?

That sounds like a good workout - starting off relatively quick and then dropping the pace. That would be very good for helping out with negative splitting.

Easy 6 miles for me tonight. Also add another 6 that silverpig forgot in his previous post:

Maybe I'm ignorant but I'd have never guessed that there was desert-like territory in BC. That just stuns me. I know you guys have had way hotter than normal temps out there this summer, is that why there are all the fires or is it standard?

My road runs here often lead me through wood smoke. There are lots of outdoor wood burners that seem to run all year long. I just take a deep breath before I get into the smoke and breathe shallowly until I clear the cloud.

Megatomic: The unusually warm temps were for the coast. Because Vancouver is by the water it stays cool in the summer and warm in the winter. A few hundred miles inland is another story. It will easily top 100F in the summer and can get to 110on some days. Combined with the dry conditions (cactus grows all over the place) and you've got ideal forest fire conditions. The southern interior of BC reminds me a lot of the wine regions of California.

Exactly. And both regions produce excellent wine.

To add to your post, given that BC is such a large geographic area, there are numerous different climates here: Oceanic (Lower Mainland), Arid, Semiarid and Taiga/Subarctic to name a few.

5 this am + 8 this pm (4 barefoot with my roommate- I haven't ran with him in over a year as he was diagnosed with cancer last May and went through chemo, radiation and 2 surgeries. He was just cleared to run again a little while ago. It was awesome running with him again!) 7845

8 fast ones this morning. Only one more run to go before the race next Sunday.

Question for the more experienced racers: aside from doing my strength routine a few times this coming week, what do I want to do with myself when I would have been running? Do I want to jog or walk or do household chores or just rest? Do I even want to do the strength routines? I know I could go out and do the race tomorrow without tapering, but I want to do my best this time. Thanks in advance for the tips.
