Nice splits IB. I'm gonna have to train hard if I'm gonna keep up with you in Boston

Got in a 5 miler yesterday night as a study break (summer classes BLOW). Hit 6:30s again. Not shabby.

Thanks allies. A lot can happen between now and Boston though, and I still have the Victoria marathon to do first!

Boo for summer classes...but that's a solid pace mate.

Apparently that cutback week last week was exactly what I needed. Today I did a workout: 10 miles at marathon pace. My goal marathon pace is somewhere between 6:20 and 6:30 so that's what I was shooting for. After a 3-mile warmup, I set off on a measured 10-mile loop. I made sure to stay nice and relaxed and not push the pace too much, especially after Monday's killer run. So I ran at what I thought was actually just a tad bit slow; it felt like 6:40s or so. Somehow, I have no idea how, I ended up running 6:10s for the loop, feeling like I was jogging. I'm not trying to brag; after all, I'm still no IB or allies or nick1985, but my recent surge in fitness has completely shocked me. I never thought 6:10s for 10 miles would feel anything less than absolutely tortuous. Hell, I ran a 10-mile race 3 years ago and didn't even average that fast! This is craziness! Anyway, with 3 up and 3 down I have 16 total for the day. 9252

Fantastic workout Scorch - you're definitely part of the AT leet runners! The 10 mile pacing should be relaxed, almost invigorating, so you're right on track there.

9.5 miles last night. Started off pretty slowly but my legs "woke up" after 6 miles. Good to know I'm not burnt out .

It's ok venkman, I pulled a muscle in my back yesterday somehow... Truth be told, I think I did it while taking a nap!!! It hurt so bad I couldn't even go bowling last night and had a hard time getting my shoes on this morning... And I'm only 25!!!!

Anyway, I did 4 miles this morning and another 8 easy miles this evening. Ran up some short but beastly hills in Mendon Ponds. 9299

Honestly, what's most enjoyable is just being able to run at whatever pace you're comfortable at, for long periods of time, and not even think twice of it. Whether or not people are hitting 5s, 6s, 7s, 8s... hell even 9s 10s, so long as they can hit their pace for extended periods of time, it's really cool The best feeling is being able to run and not get tired. When are you scheduled for a marathon again Mega?

Excellent run. I have a feeling that both you and IB are gonna have a couple of great races.

I had a similar run today, although it was only a 5 miler. 2.5 felt awful, then started to feel good and clicked off a 6:05 and 6:10, then cooled it down around 7:30 pace for the last half mile. I do think my legs are pretty destroyed from squatting 3 times a week and lifting 4-5 times a week.

Also played tennis tonight, and I could barely cover ground. Although that wasn't as much of a problem as getting the damn ball over the net

Great post man.

I agree that one of the best aspects of this sport is finding your cruising pace (no matter what it is) and ripping off mile after mile (km after km ), and feeling more and more energized the longer you go.

I certainly hope Scorch and I both race well!

Yes, it's funny how you can be feeling like absolute crap at the start of a run and really turn it on later. I've had some of my best workouts ever on days where I seriously felt so dump that I almost skipped running.

allies - the deadlift thread is that way -------> Crazy mofo with your massive amounts of lifting

25 minute variable tempo tonight. Including w/u and c/d, 8 miles total. What a difference a good night of sleep makes - feeling much improved today.

Truth. I feel the same way and my hold it for a long time pace is about 7:45 to 8:00. If I can learn to do that over the distances I want to race I will do VERY well. My next race is a 50K around most of Canandaigua Lake on October 10. If I was in better shape or if the race was on trails I'd do the full 50 mile version and completely loop around the lake. But for this year that's gonna be my pinnacle.

Next year I plan to do a 100k race and in 2011 a 100 mile race. So that's why I say if I can learn to hold an 8 min mile pace I will be doing great, that's elite performance. I think I'd be happy with a 9 min mile pace in those races at this point.

I do think my legs are pretty destroyed from squatting 3 times a week and lifting 4-5 times a week.
Personally I think the squats and lunges help my legs to feel better on my run days. I don't do heavy squats or lunges (I use 2 35 pound dumbbells) though, that may be the defining difference...

Mega - you race the day before me mate . Looking forward to a big result from you!

50k is a pretty substantial distance, but I still can't believe you're going to eventually work your way up to a 100 miler! :Q

Previously I tried the heavier squats and lunges as allies is doing, and I found it destroyed my legs too much. I was simply wiped for the hard workouts.

Now I'm doing something similar to you - lighter weight, higher rep lunges and squats. I also use 35 lb dumbbells; for explosive lunges I use the bar, loaded between 105 to 125 lbs and I do 3 sets at 8-12 reps.

I also found that 3 weight sessions per week was too tiring for me - twice per week seems to be perfect. I still feel a "burn" but I recover pretty quickly. It's all about experimenting since everyone's body reacts differently.

2x 3 miles today. this workout didn't go quite as well as the last 3. It wasn't bad per se, it was just more of a typical workout than a crazy whiz-bang where did that come from like I've been having. Went 18:30, 17:30. Fell into a lull in the first repeat and didn't push as hard as I wanted, so I made up for it on the 2nd one with a 5:33 last mile. 3 up and 3 down for 12 total. 9336

5.5 miles this morning with 4 strides, then another easy 7 this afternoon at Mendon Ponds. Added with the 0.5 that I dropped from my long run, that wiould give me another 13 miles, and my highest week ever at 95 miles! With tomorrow's medium-long run I should have over 100 miles in 7 days! 9359
