I wish there were some in the Dallas area, but it's such a rush running through the woods. The slippery rocks/roots/etc made it challenging but I think that's why I liked it so much.
Yup, all it takes is one trail race and you're hooked. Welcome to the fold RB. I really really wish my next race was on the trails...

I did a very hilly 9 miler tonight. My cardio was awesome even on the long uphill hauls, I feel pretty good all in all, like I'm about ready for the big one.

Hill running really is an exciting niche specialty within running. I think the varied terrain, along with the feeling of constantly being on the edge of losing control is the appeal. I will definitely be doing at least one trail race next summer. Congrats on your first one RB!

And Mega - great to hear your fitness is where it needs to be as the taper nears.

Hill repeats tonight - 7x400m. Started off relatively slowly, but I think that's because I increased my weights yesterday morning. Each one got slightly faster though, and I really found overdrive on the last two, knocking off 4 seconds on the 6th and then a further 5 seconds on the last one.

With warmup and cooldown, 8 miles total.

I wish I had time in my life to work on speed like you and Scorch do, IB. I'm sure it pays huge dividends, but my schedule is already so full.

I know the season is not yet over, but I just want to say that the runners in this forum have done an awesome job this year. I think each and every one of us has shown alot of improvement in speed and distance, this thread was a damned good idea.

Cheers Mega . Yea, this thread has been fantastic - I've felt a real sense of camaraderie to see everyone encouraging each other and watch you guys and girls get faster and fitter. It's also been a great incentive to do my workouts so that I continually have something to contribute.

I'm really stoked for October, when a bunch of us will race and really show the improvements we've made over the year .

The speedwork does make a huge difference but you're right, all of this training takes time. Right now I'm training roughly 20 hours a week, including weights and stretching, and I definitely have to sacrifice some things. At a certain point, you run up against diminishing returns - I might double my time investment for only a small improvement. But you do what you can.

Maybe I need to get faster so I can land a sponsor, quit work and train 24/7 .

9 miles for me this morning.

You too, dude!!! You have made amazing progress, and holy hell, you're doing a freaking ultra soon! You will soon belong to the most hardcore of the hardcore. Already, you're damn hardcore! I can't wait to see what everyone does in the future!

As for me, I did mile repeats today. Was supposed to do 8 of them. I didn't really have a set pace to hit, so based how I felt warming up (tired, go figure), that I would do the first one at 6:00 and try to drop 5 seconds off each subsequent mile. Went out feeling comfortable on the first one for 5:57. Perfect. Kicked up the effort a notch on the next one and went 5:58. WTF? Picked up another notch and barely eked out a 5:56. I could tell I was going slow, but my legs just didn't want to go any faster. Finally, on the 4th one, they shifted into gear a bit, and I was able to go 5:50, 5:46, 5:34 for the next 3. I was feeling beat so I decided to do 2 laps of striding the straights and jogging the curves and head home. So, it wasn't a bad workout per se, but not a great one either. Did feel good to stretch out the legs on the last 3 miles and let em rip though. 14 total for the day. 9673

I wouldn't worry too much...8x1 mile is a friggin' beast of a workout even for marathoners, especially if your rest is quick. And you did close well, dropping down to a 5:34 on the last one . I can recall that the longest mile workout I ever did was only 6x1 mile.

I think I'll do some mile repeats on my next hard week instead of 800s, just to mix it up.

4 this morning plus 10 this evening (with 4 barefoot). Nothing quite like a 14-mile recovery day! I certainly am living up to my "Mileage Whore" title, eh? Do I get a plaque or a badge for that??

9 hilly miles again tonight. It was incredible, I got to see the sun set, the full moon rise, see half the sky in twilight and other half in darkness, and hear animal sounds I've never heard before. I felt the cool night air move in to replace the warmth of the day. At the risk of sounding mushy it was one of the most beautiful moments (well, hour...) of my life.

 Tell you what: put "Official AT Mileage Whore" in your sig for the moment, and then maybe we can work on an official belt presentation when you make it to Boston .

9.5 miles tonight. I have a pretty savage hike planned with friends on Sunday so I've decided to do my long run on Saturday, race pacing tomorrow, and thus only a steady run (no tempo) tonight.

What kind of a sick freak does a massive hike on their "rest day"?

Well, it turns out my plan was not such a good one. I did the 10 mile race pace tempo today and chuffed it badly. I was on pace and feeling good 7 miles in, and then I just went lactic HARD. Barely held on to 6:20s to the finish. Finished in 1:01:10 (6:07 avg) .

It's been a hard week (both work and training) and my legs are pretty toasted (I guess weightlifting yesterday didn't help either). Apparently I really needed that rest day today and I'm kicking myself for not taking it. I'm going to have to rest tomorrow and try the long run on Sunday as usual and tell my buddy I can't do the hike . Then I'll take it easy as next week is a down week.

The bright side is that I'm sure I'll bounce back, but this late in the game, I can't take any risks.

13 miles total. 9733

Jeez IB, and you were surprised that I wanted to do 8 mile repeats? Here you are doing 10 milers at 6:07 pace, with a fade at the end! Truly sick!!! Definitely take that rest day and let your body compensate and rebuild. Good luck on the long run Sunday!

I did 4 miles this morning, then another 8 this evening with 4 barefoot with my friend D. 12K "race" tomorrow; will be doing it as a tempo run. 12 total today. 9745

I wanted to do that run, but I'd already made plans involving the spouse... And I'm still walking on eggshells with her over the Mountain Madness race. If I'm not nice I won't have her to chauffeur me from the 50k point of the Can Lake 50 (the end of my race) back to FLCC where the post race party is.

Pay attention here, this is marital give and take. You're going to be doing some of this stuff soon.

This is a light weekend for me, so I can enjoy labor day

Did a moderate-pace 8 mile run yesterday, so I can now enjoy my 3-day weekend
