Look at adding some plyometrics (especially quick steps and lunges) and squats, as well as stretching, to your program if you're not already doing these.
I have been on a core strength/plyometrics program for the past 6 weeks and it has helped my form and injury prevention tremendously. Prior to this, I had chronic problems with shin splints and stress fractures.

Thank you very much for this. I'm past shin splints as the muscles don't hurt anymore, and while I haven't had an x-ray yet, I'm pretty sure I'm into stress fracture territory as it is the bone itself that hurts when I run.
I do several minutes of stretching after every workout so I'm okay there, but I'll check out the plyometrics for sure.

Stand on just the leg that hurts. Now jump up and down on it a few times. If you can't do that more than 2 or 3 times, it's probably a stress fracture. Also, if you can pinpoint an exact location where it hurts (and will hurt if you push on it with your finger), it's probably a stress fracture. If you're able to jump and the pain is more generalized, probably just MTSS (medial tibial stress syndrome - what most people refer to when they say shin splints). Definitely see a doc and get a bone scan. An x-ray won't help as stress fractures are usually too fine to show up on x-rays. Good luck.
