Do you guys run/workout while you're sick? i find it very hard to even run half of my normal 3 miles while sick, but i do think it helps me feel better the next day, just hard to get motivated that day to do it. what helps you guys while your not feeling well to get out there and run? I plan to workout tonight, just like i planned to last night lol so we'll see.

This is a pretty subjective question.

The general rule is that if you have a fever, or fluid in your lungs (i.e. chest infection), DON'T RUN. If you have just a head cold but no headache (i.e. it's "above the neck") you should be ok to workout, although you won't be as fast as usual.

There are exceptions though - I thought I had just a head cold on the weekend so I continued as usual, albeit with a bit more sleep. After Tuesday night's hard workout (which felt pretty good), I had a fever come on very suddenly, which scared the shit out of me.

I've been out of commission with a full-on flu since then, and my whole body feels very spaced out despite staying home from work yesterday. I hope I'm good to go again on Saturday but we'll see.

What was your ER visit for? I'd be very careful about attempting running in that case. If you're in doubt, just take a few days off to be safe.

Here's to a speedy recovery, IB  (it's chicken noodle soup in a mug )

Also, Mega... let us know if you can run or not. Any clue as to how it happened (I might've missed this earlier)

+10 today. Felt great.

allies, I took a spill while running a trail the weekend before last. Took me a week of pain to decide to go to the doctor's office, then it took them 3 days to tell me a rib was broken. I ran three times after breaking it, once during the run of course. I am really really bummed out, I got pulled from my ultra. All that work for nothing. Unless I can find one later this year after my restriction is up...

ya i just mean head colds/allergies not the really bad stuff like fluid in the lungs, etc. I went to the ER for some severe pains i was having, but that's all fixed up now. Just right after that my sinuses hit me Really hard :/

either way i ended up running 3 miles today with a good ol P90x workout before hand.

so that's 10207

I haven't had much time to run or post my runs lately. On Thursday, I only had time to get a token 4 mile morning run in as Ashlie and I had our engagement photos done in the afternoon. Then yesterday, we had to meet some of her friends out at 7:00, so I had to cut my run short. I still did an 8-mile tempo in about 47 minutes, but I only did 2 up and 1 down for 11 total instead of the 14 I had planned. So 15 miles in the last 2 days. 10,230

and 12 miles today. Another low week at 82, but that's ok since I raced on Sunday and did two hard workouts this week. Next few weeks are gonna be high mileage again and then start tapering!! 10,242

Tried a run this morning after 3 full days off. Did my scheduled 10 mile race pace tempo. Overall ok. Went under my mile splits easily for most of the first 7 miles (although I struggled on the uphill sections) and then hit a wall at 8 miles - felt like the congestion was backing up into my lungs and I definitely had less energy than usual. I almost fainted at one of the stoplights too, but I was determined to finish. Closed in a 6:03, which was the same as my average.

Saw a doctor this afternoon, and I have no throat infection or chest congestion, so he figures it's just a virus and recommends rest and fluids. I don't know how much time I can take off this close to the race though without losing fitness . I'm really not sure what to do.

12 miles total. 10,265

Jeez IB, take it easy, will ya? I mean, yeah, if you pass out on a training run you are officially hardcore, but I think you already earned that title!!!

I did 22 today. First 12 or so with my buddy D at a pretty decent clip (sub-7s definitely), next 10 on my own. I kept pace for the first 6 miles after that, but then I couldn't find the water bottle I planted so I had to take a Gu without water and then I was just craving water for the last 4 miles. I am exhausted now. While it wasn't a bad run at all, it was probably the hardest 20+ miler I've had this year. I'm not a morning person at all. 10,290

Sorry to hear about your illness IB. I feel your pain though. Just do the resting and you should be fine for your race.

Thanks Mega. After talking to my friends and my parents over the past couple of days, they're all telling me the same thing: rest dammit! It's a hard concept for me to follow but I'm doing it now, and feeling better today than yesterday.

I'm sure in a few days I'll be healthy again and I'll be able to do maintenance training. I'm probably making it out to be much worse than it really is.

I feel really bad for you dude - injuries are way more serious and they suck hard. Hope your rib heals up soon.

Thanks. I'm going to go back to doing some "light" jogging. For me that'll be any run less than a half. The funny part of this is that my wife said to go ahead and start light jogging again not remembering that I was prepared for ultra distances. My son asked what I was going to do and I said an easy 9 miles several times a week. She started to balk until I said hey, a 9 miler is less than a third of what I want to be doing. She relented but was less than happy. haha At least she cares.

Take it easy Mega! Remember, its always better to be undertrained than injured (more)! Let me know if you want to try to get together and run again!

Anyway, I did 12 today: 3 this morning feeling like poo and 9 tonight (5 barefoot) feeling like slightly better poo. 10,282

Thanks for the warning, I will take it easy. I did an easy strength workout today, I did feel a twinge in the area of the break so I avoided crunches and my back extensions. Tomorrow I'm going to do a 10 miler on the CVT. No roots and mud to make me fall.

10 miles today of hill repeats. Wanted 12 but I've been feeling like a turd lately and Ashlie was waiting for me so I cut it short. 10,292

I knocked out a 5 mile sprint today, the legs and ribs felt great, the lungs rebelled... Weird, normally my breathing is the least of my worries. Anyways, the plan for the week is to do another 5 miler tomorrow and Thursday, do strength on Friday, run 12 on Saturday and another 12 on Sunday if I'm feeling up to it.

I found another ultra in my region this year, the Mendon Trail Run. It happens on Nov. 7, I'm sure I could be ready for it.

Woohoo to the miles and lack of deerflies!!!! Ain't it great???

I did around 13 today - a little over 4 this morning and a little over 8.5 this evening. Felt fairly decent both times so that's good news. Have a pretty big workout tomorrow (16 w 12 @ MP) and then a hilly 14K race on Sunday. 10,320

I'm BACK!!

After all that rest, I'm about 90% healthy again. Ran an easy 8.5 miles tonight just to test out my sinuses - still a bit of residual crap to work out, but my energy levels are good.

Mega - good to hear you've got another ultra to shoot for. I'll be racing Nov 7 too - local relay race with my old track buddies. I'm not sure how helpful I'll be after a couple weeks off post-marathon but it's supposed to be a hell of a post-race party .

Scorch - I'm impressed at how you just keep on truckin'! Have a great race on Sunday!
