Well, I pulled a groin muscle a couple of weeks ago, and it must be throwing my stride off, since now on any run over ~12miles, my knee on the other leg gets sore. So that means no marathon this year for me. I don't want to risk hurting my knee. So I'm just taking it easier on the mileage for a while, until it heals. I hate groin pulls, they take forever to get over.

And I ran 5 yesterday

Hey, nice race Scorch!

Some of you guys really need to get off the injury train though; it's no fun!

I'm going to do some hills tonight for the first time in a few weeks and see how sharp my legs are.

Doh! I missed your mini race report Scorch, sorry man. That's a hell of a fast run, excellent job!

Dang, that sucks. I'm in the same boat, my pinnacle race for the year was pulled for me by my doctor. I'm now looking for something fun but shorter to run. I did find a 20k trail race, but it's pretty technical and may be a challenge.

15 miles today. 2x 4 miles @ 23:40, 23:20 with half mile jogs after. 3 up and 3 down. Felt awesome and it was a perfect night for a workout; cool, breezy and just a very light sprinkle of rain now and then. 10,624

Damn Garfield, that's disappointing . I feel bad for you man.

I did 5x400 m hills tonight and my times were only a couple seconds slower than the last time I ran hills one month ago. More importantly, I felt light and fast, which is key at this point.

7 miles. 10,631

It's not that bad, I can still run it next year. And I did break 50min easily on the Peachtree 10K, so 1 out of 2 goals isn't bad.

I did 10 today on the CVT. It was cool and breezy and the sun actually showed itself for a few minutes. Pretty awesome time all around.

Well boys and girls, I managed to pick up another flu of some type yesterday :| (thus I haven't posted here in a couple days).

Seriously, I was feeling normal from Sunday until Wednesday night, and then all of a sudden I got a sore throat. I was slightly congested Thursday morning.

The thing that annoys me is that I've been very diligent about washing my hands and keeping my cubicle disinfected at work. I've been sleeping more than normal and I've already been tapering my workouts. Somehow it wasn't enough.

There seems to be a really nasty flu going around and a lot of my coworkers are affected. Luckily this one is not nearly as intense as the first one, and I'm hitting the Cold-FX hard to destroy this one.

9 days to go and I seriously need to get myself healthy again. Most frustrating thing ever.

Good luck getting healthy. After my race last Saturday I came down with an illness. Sore throat, congestion, headache. Actually started on Monday at school and stayed with me until last night. I've been taking it easy because I don't want to get worse. Think I should be able to get a run in tomorrow though, depending on how I sleep tonight.

Sorry IB. You know the drill man, rest and sleep or the race is going to be a mess. I'm sure you're still more than ready for your marathon.

On a different note, I got my running partner back. My son is back to running with me. We're going to attempt the Interlocken Trail together tomorrow morning. This'll be his first go around, and this is the trail where I busted my rib. Should be fun. I'm hoping he can do at least 13 miles, there's a 20k trail race in a few weeks I'd like to do but it's technical. We shall see.

Man, everyone is getting sick these days!!! Take it easy IB; you'll get over in time. I find I always get sick when I start to taper too. It's like my body knows that I'm starting to wind down so it lets its guard down or something.

I did mile repeats again today, in the cold lonely rain. While I still didn't hit my goal of 8 of them at 5:20, it was still probably my best mile repeat workout to date. I did 6 in 5:30, 5:29, 5:29, 5:30, 5:26, 5:32. 6 seems to be about my limit; which is ok since they were nearly at 5K pace. I got overloaded with lactic acid on the last one and started to tie up so called it quits after that one. With warmup, cooldown and recovery, that gave me 14 for the day. 10,700

easy 8 on some trails. All the beatniks, yuppies, puppies, hippies, vegans, boy scouts, girl scouts and their grandmas were out today!!! (probably because it was the first nice sunny warm day we've had in over a week!) 10,713

My son and I did a freaking awesome 14 miles on the Interlocken Trail today. This is the trail I broke my rib on last time. No trips, no falls, and only a half-turn of an ankle. It was the best time I've had in months. And yes, there were lots of people out today, all hiking aside from us.

So, we ran THROUGH 2 herds of cattle. The cow piles were HUGE. But the cows are free range, they didn't stink and neither did their poop. Unlike the common cows on the farms around our house...

Anyways, I am in such a great mood right now. In 15 minutes the nachos will be done and the mince pie will be up soon thereafter.

I'm "training" to run the New Orlean's Mardi Gras marathon in February, but truth be told, I have no idea what I'm doing. I've just been running 6 miles faster and faster. I went out and ran 12 last Saturday. I find that I get bored more than I get tired or sore, and end up wanting to stop running just because it would switch things up. What occupies your mind when you run for so long?

I think about so many different things while I'm out. I think about work, the kids, my wife, my form, how my body feels, the race I'm training for, music, and a bunch of other stream of consciousness stuff. When I'm doing trails, it's easy to not be bored. I'm BUSY scanning the trail in front of me for roots, rocks, potholes, changes in elevation, and other obstacles. I did 14 miles in just under 2 hours - sounds slow but it was actually hauling ass for the terrain - and it went by in a flash.

Something else you can do to alleviate the boredom is to find a training partner. Someone you can chit chat with. My son is almost 18 and he runs with me. We talk the entire time we're out. Sometimes it's about life, sometimes it's random crap. Or jokes. Or about our upcoming race.
