Have not got my card yet,
Mail in the Chicago suburbs is Scary Slow!

I wonder should we carry the $100 balance until the credit is applied ,then pay off the interest,

I wonder how much that would be on a $100 for up to 3 months?

Or use the card for 2 $100 purchases.

HUH ? You make a purchase and they give you $100 credit. You don't have to purchase $100.

Also, the reason i ask is because in the envelope they didn't mention anything about the gift card offer, just the bonus points for signing up. Citi and other CC companies always include atleast a page on the promo i signed up under.

I would try checking out the Fatwallet thread. This deal is definitely legit, and definitely still going on.

I talked to an agent after validating my card. The $100 credit will be applied 8-12 weeks after the first purchase; see the fine print at the bottom of the link in the original post.

don't forget that your purchase must be at least 100.00 or you receive none. They didn't do this so you get the better of them you know. their not stupid!!! think about it!

After your first purchase, you receive $100 Credit.

Here:

* Offer subject to credit approval. Credit will be applied to your Sony Card account 8-12 weeks after your
first purchase. Offer valid through August 31, 2005, first purchase must be made by November 30, 2005.
credit aprroval my ass, more like did you purchase enough to qualify for 100.00 rebate?
It's like any other rebates and it stinks that they are hiding the truth from the public. CC company like these are hoping you would overspend so they can bill your ass many times over.

Very shady, risky for the uncontrollable spender. CC is really short for IOU. Spend now, pay later with interest!

You can sign up as much as you want.
It doesn't look good on your credit tho...

that sucks, I thought the more credit cards, the better your score should be since I pay my bills on time.

If I were you I would check out the finance forum on "hugebillfold." They have some very good posts about this exact topic- its more complex than simply applying / having too many or too few cards. Good luck to you - my simple answer is that $100 is worth going for as the hit to the score for applying for a card is only a few points usually - just pay it off on time. In the long run - the more cards you have - the better...to a point.

Not to post-crap, here, but this is a wayyyy too simplified look at credit scores.

Best long-term advice is keep the cards you already have, don't apply for any new one's, and stay current on the current cards.

The lenght of time that you've had a card plays a big roll in score.

Here's another thing to consider...
You have 20 cards that all have a 5k limit. You've kept a zero balance on all of them every month. Seems great, right?
Well, you go to get a loan for a $100k house. The bank determines that you have enough income to support a $100k debt. Problem is, you already have access to $100k from your credit cards. They won't want to give you the loan for fear that you'll go max out all of your cards next month and have $200k in debt, with the income means to only pay a $100k debt. In other words, they'll turn you down.

This, too, is simplified, but I'm trying to illustrate the complexities of the credit score situation.

Basically, JSLIM, if you don't want to do the research to understand the credit score situation, I'd advise you to pass on offers like this.

My $0.02.

OK, before I go dive in and do this to order the $99.99 brand-new re-release of the 1978 Jeff Wayne's War of the Worlds Collector's Edition musical from Sony Music Store, please assure me of a few things:

What is the minimum purchase price? Will I still get my $100 if I have to cancel the card before 12 weeks? Do you see any problems with me doing this?

you provide a logical arguement, but you're wrong. i have over $200K in credit card credit, i only use one and never let them charge me on interest, and i applied for a mortgage and they passed me with flying colors because all my cards never had a deliquency. i could never pay the credit cards back if i maxed them out, yet every time i turn around they are raising the limits. they range fro $15K to $30K now and still climbing. it's like they are just daring me to use them. good thing the republicans recently passed laws so you will never EVER be able to get out of debt from credit cards and will become an indentured servant if you try or i might be tempted to max them out and see what happens in vegas.

These kind of deals always make me a little nervous. This is why something like the Amazon.com and Buy.com VISA cards are more attractive. They give you $30 almost instantly to be used on something you are purchasing right now. I got the Amazon card last year and ended up liking it. In addition, every $2,500 in spending nets you one $25 certificate to Amazon. Amazon purchases give count three times, so in essence you are getting 3% back on Amazon purchases.

My point isn't to trash this card, it is probably totally legit. It is just that sometimes $30 in the pocket today is worth more than a promised $100 down the line.

PS - I'm currently anxiously awaiting a $150 gift card as part of a Schwab VISA deal. I'm still in the time window of when it is supposed to arrive, but the closer it gets, the more I dread having to fight for it when they don't pay. A bird in the hand is worth two in the field.

Anyone else thinking that this is a great way to take the edge off the XBOX360 price?

Yep. I've already gotten two $100 credits on two consecutive promos (cancelling card after each) and as soon as I get my next statement I'll be signing up for the one bf1942 just posted. Too easy.

Haven't checked this thread in a while, and you probably aren't either, artist99, but just in case....

In my post, one of the ground rules was that you only had enough income to support $100k in debt. In your particular case, should you max out all $200k of your credit card credit, I would assume the sum of the minimum payments would fall into the very liberal range of what you could afford to pay on a monthly basis - as determined by the creditors. (It is important to keep in mind that the amount (percentage) of you income that creditors believe can be paid toward debt is unrealistically high.)

If the minimum payment of the maximum credit available to you is higher than "x" percent of your monthly income, you will have much difficulty getting a mortgage, for example.

That said, if you are less than that "x" percent, and you keep zero balances, no late payments, etc., as in your case, I agree....the banks will be doing back-flips to get your mortgage business.
