I just got an email saying it's "on backorder"

Beside from the rebate issues, what's the chance the new batch will not be TY ?

Highly unlikely. I bought these at BB, new design, black bottom cake holder without the spin top. They show up as TYs. Also bought some at OM this week, old design, they too are TYs. I'm sure most, if not all, Fuji's are Made in Japan. But stock up, cause you never know when they'll switch manufacturers and go with some else other then TY.

Yeah, I thought the whole "TY's are the best" thing was based on a study a few years back. Has there been any recent study showing that these are actually better than the rest?

There are no studies, and this is largely a matter of preference.

First of all: (For anyone who doesnt know) Only a handful of companies make discs for the major label distributors, TY and Ritek being the big ones. So, for all the people who say "I only burn XYZ Brand discs," you should know that you're probably burning all different types of discs, since XYZ Brand most likely isn't the company that made them.

TY -- Taiyo Yuden -- is a manufacturer known for making great-quality discs. Their discs are always able to be burned with the fastest burners, and they (allegedly) have the best shelf life you can get. The latter is a real problem for many types of discs. I've burned things on those cheap OfficeMax 200-for-a-dollar discs, and a year later they're unplayable.

Admittedly, a big part of this is the snob factor. People on here read that TY is the best, and then ANYTIME someone posts a deal about CD-R's, there has to be a big debate about whether or not they're Taiyo Yudens. What's the best? I can't say, and I don't think anyone could empirically say. But I don't think you'll ever hear any complaints about TY discs. And in cases like this, where they're just as cheap as Brand X, there's no reason not to go for them.

There was an article from '99 where they artificially aged CD-R's with temperature/humidity chambers and checked for errors, which may be the one you're talking about. TY performed well in that one. I've just been doing some searching and can't come up with anything else on reliability. That type of data is expensive to generate, so a lot of the review sites will never be able to do it. If anybody has anything newer on this, please give a link. Some of the sites do error checking on media fresh out of the box, and TY generally does among the best on that.

I had some issues with Verbatim (CMC) discs that lost data over a 2 yr period, even though they were stored in cases and climate-controlled the entire time. :| That experience converted me from the "it doesn't matter what you burn on" camp. I switched over to TY and so far (18 months) they've been rock solid.

And like MontyBurns said, as long as they're this cheap, it's not a tough decision to make.

I assume if you register online with Fuji you'll still get the rebate even if the discs are backordered for a while? I e-mailed Fuji about this and got no response. Has anyone else asked and gotten an answer?

You won't get the rebate until you submit your paperwork. If done online you will get a UPC to print out and mail along with your paperwork. You should get your rebate about 3 weeks after they receive all of these items. I've done online, it took about 3 weeks, I didn't do one online(their website was down 2nd week of Oct.), called today, and the rebate is on it's way. Register online, but don't expect a rebate until you submit the proper forms. The online form will ask: date of purchase, where, store #, how many, how much is rebate, etc...So you really should wait until you have the item in hand.

Why buy any other CDRs, if you can get these for 100/$10? And the bottom color is purty.

Hope that answers your questions.

Ok.. Thanks for the lessons on CDR's. Now, how do I identify TY discs? Do I have to take someone's word for it or is there a list of brands that use TY discs?

Thanks again.

I realize that, I was just wondering about any expiration. Fuji's page doesn't list one, so I assume there isn't one, so long as you ordered at the right time.

I'm looking at a photocopy of my BB rebate form for the Fuji's that I purchased on 10/6 and it says, "Postmark Date: 11/12/02, also I purchased some Fuji's on 10/28 and it says, "Postmark Date: 12/02/02". So it appears as if you have about 4 weeks to submit your rebate.

To find out who manufactured your CD, try Nero Info Tool at:

BTW, BB seems to have Fuji CDRs on sale about every other week, so if you can get by a few days you may want to wait. I didn't see them this week, so maybe next week, week of Dec. 8, they probably will be on sale.
