This player has an MSRP of US$399, but many stores sell it for much less than that.

OMG.

It's supposedly gonna apply to Amazon.com as well. That means the Toshiba HD-A2 could be under $200!

as long as retailers don't raise the price before the instant rebate to just make more money this should make for some really good deals on these players. 200 or less is a very good deal on these and something I'll probably jump on since I was looking at getting a new upscaling dvd player it's not that big of a jump to hd dvd.

Well, the price at Amazon.com is now back up to $320. So we won't be seeing an HD DVD player under $200. However, if they keep this $320 price, that means we could see a $220 HD-A2 with the rebate.

Here's a blurb the official press release:

The rebate will be available across a wide range of retailers, including Best Buy, Circuit City, HHGregg, Amazon.com and many others. The marketing and retail campaigns will also coincide with the Warner Home Video release of The Complete Matrix Trilogy and Letters from Iwo Jima, and the Paramount Home Entertainment release of Flags of Our Fathers on May 22nd, and will be supported by a multi-million dollar advertising campaign incorporating TV, online, newspaper, and radio.

It's down to $277 now. So, we should be able to get this for $177, right? If so I'll probably jump.

wonder if this will apply to the costco's version of the HD-A2 which is the HD-D2 (supposedly identical to the HD-A2).

$277 is by some 3rd party dealer. Amazon sells it for $313 at the moment. Still, if they keep the price anywhere south of $350 then it will be a great price with the rebate: Somewhere between $213 and $249?

Apparently, some are selling the HD-A2 now. Plus the 2nd part of the deal says "any Toshiba". I'm not sure if Costco is included in the deal though.

P.S. There is a guy over at Value Electronics who gives deals to AVS members. He sells the A2 for $299 currently, but I'm not entirely sure what deal he'll be offering with the rebate.

Does this rebate apply to all stores selling this unit? I may have to sell my A1 and get this.

Not all stores, AFAIK.

However....

Dammit:
Sorry to bust your bubble boys, but to qualify for the instant rebates, the product must be purchased at suggested minimum pricing shown on the invoice, followed by the $100.00 credit shown as a line item. This was made very clear in the note from Toshiba several weeks ago announcing the rebate program.

Dealers are not receiving the entire $100.00 credit back as part of this promotion. Forget about A2's at $199.00. They will be $299.00 after the rebate, A20's are $399.00 after the rebate, and XA2's are $699.00 after rebate. The five free DVD promotion is still in place until July 31st. I am sure that aggressive retailers like Robert at VE will have something in place to provide the best possible deal to his customers, given the parameters of the rebate program.

So, it does look like most will sell it at $299. Still not a bad deal given the 5 free HD DVDs, but not as "hot" as $249 or less. We shall see.

I currently own the xbox 360 version of the hd-dvd and I hate it since it needs the 360 to run it.
This will be on my high list of what to get for FD.
The Amazon deal is currently at $277.78 + shipping.
WOW!!!

There is some debate there about it though.

WOW!!!

That's from Electronics Expo, not Amazon itself.

As I mentioned before there's no guarantee that the $100 discount will apply to that $278 price, or even Amazon's $320 price.

Pricing will definitely be below $300 with the rebate, but I'm not sure by how much. We should find out in a few days.

Best Buy and Circuit City are advertising the $100 off deal, but off MSRP. The bonus though is that in addition to the free 5 HD DVDs (mail-in deal), they give you another 2 free HD DVDs, if you buy a Matrix Trilogy set.

Optional 4 year extended warranty is $29.99.

Whats the difference between the 2 players? Anyone order from that site before?

I have the A1 currently, its the 1st gen. Its beefer built than the A2 had has the same input as the A2 but the A2 does not have component. The A2 has a faster loading time than the A1, the remotes sucks on the A1 IMO. The remote on the A2 is better designed. I am hoping that the A2 will be less than $299 with the $100 off as I dont think its still that great of a deal. I am looking at the $250 range.

Which 2 players?

Anyways, the A2 is the baseline model. 1080i output.
The A20 is one step up with 1080p output.
The XA2 is another step up and also has analogue 5.1 out among other things.

And there are other models listed there too.

Buy a Toshiba (any hd-dvd model) between now and 8/31 you're entitled for 5 free movies.
Linky
Those free are pretty lousy movies, imo but you can always resell them.
