Don't hold your breath on the five free DVDs. I sent in my rebate for the previous three free DVD offer on January 20 and still have not received them despite the fact that they say they received my rebate submission each of the three times I called them.

Yeah, it seems to take Toshiba a very long time to send out those disks. They do eventually get them though:

I just checked this afternoon.

Out of the 3HD-DVD offer 514006, 77% of all submissions shipped out. 23% remain in processing/ready to ship status.

Out of the 5HD-DVD offer 514007, 100% remain with no data entry (no customer files created) yet. 0% processed + shipped out of over 6,000 submissions received. as soon as the paperwork is verified, there will be a customer file.
*Btw* if there is a customer file created already for this offer, it was already done through Customer Service when customer calls to check status, or the submission was unqualified. El Paso TX processing has only processed all of the unqualified letters to unqualified customers first.
also, from what i've noticed most HD-DVD shipments go out on fridays.
I'll be posting a new reply to this thread the day of Qualified Customer Data Entry for this promo to ease the concern of those who are still waiting to see if Toshiba will process these as advertised. (They will...)

So basically, three-quarters of those who ordered from last year's 3 HD DVD deal have got them, but nobody has gotten the 5 HD DVDs from the newer deal from this year yet. Sloooww, and disappointing...

however the average person is not going to spend $600 on a player. once people can buy these things for $200 or less expect to see a huge jump in the amount of people who own HD-DVD players. some movie studios may be exclusive now but they will definitely change their mind if there is enough demand for HD-DVD movies.

even if HD-DVD fails, there are still a lot of movies out now and a lot more will still come out in the next year or two. all of those movies will still be available and it's not like your hd-dvd player will stop working if the format war fails. every hd-dvd movie that you own will still work! i personally have an HD-DVD player and I love it.

yeah but you can still use your Toshiba HD-DVD player for its outstanding DVD playing performance.

ElFenix: Actually, DVD was the fasted adopted format of all time when it was introduced. It was already well established before $100 players were commonplace at Wal-Mart. The $99 price point helped it kill off VHS more quickly, but it was already well on its way there before $99 was a common price for DVD.

Please do not spread rumors/mis-information. Walmart announced a couple weeks ago that the rumors regarding their under $200 HD-DVD rumors were FALSE. It was an inquiry in whether it would be possible, and were looking at a late 2008 manufacturing date, but everything is very preliminary. No agreements have been made yet.

That said, I love my HD-A2, and it's worth every penny.

I wouldn't go by the rebate guy from Toshiba who posts that hogwash in that thread and the other ones that were deleted that preceded it. Read the posts by the frustrated people like me who have waited months and only get the run around when we call about the THREE FREE DVDs. I bought two units. One was from Value Electronics mentioned above. They are very good and give you the TWO free DVDs right away, but the other three from Toshiba you can forget about. You won't get them and now with the Five Free DVD bogus offer it is a complete joke. I have also TWICE requested a firmware upgrade disc since I bought my first of two HD DVD players last July. They never send it. So people download it and some people destroy their players by doing the firmware upgrade ISO burn incorrectly. Toshiba does not follow through on their promises and after you read the other posts besides the one from the rebate guy who works for Toshiba that you quoted above you will realize that this DEAL is only a good "deal" if you are willing to GIVE UP the free DVDs you will NEVER SEE from Toshiba.

Yeah...

Amazon and Best Buy and CC, etc. are selling the A2 for $299, which is $399 minus $100 instant rebate. ValueElectronics is doing the same but adding some freebies.
Sam's Club and Cost-co are selling the D2 (which is the same thing) for $249, which is $349 minus $100 instant rebate. It also apparently includes a free HDMI cable.

All of the above include at least 5 free HD DVDs from Toshiba, but it takes a very long time to receive those discs. A few of them are also offering an extra few free discs which you get immediately at the time when you buy. Amazon also has some deal for more free discs if you buy the Matrix Trilogy.

it was 'well established,' however, note that i said 'really catch fire.' from twister's release in late 1996 or so until the end of 2002, DVD had only achieved 40% market penetration in north america. while this may well be the fastest consumer electronics adoption in history, it still doesn't mean that people were buying $150 sony players in 2001 at anywhere near the rate people bought $50 cyberhome players.

Some people tend to get careless or lazy to read its fine print and get burned in the process.
Upgrading the firmware with dvd/cd player needs an ISO burn disc to do so successfully.
