Amazon.com deal for HD-A2, 7 HD DVDs, and Matrix Trilogy
Buy a Toshiba HD-A2 HD DVD player by June 16, and you can get up to seven free HD DVDs.
You'll receive two free HD DVDs from Amazon.com when you buy the HD-A2 and either The Ultimate Matrix Collection or The Complete Matrix Trilogy. There's also a rebate offer on the HD-A2 that lets you get five more HD DVDs from Toshiba. To top this deal off, the HD-A2 is now at our lowest price ever--less than $300.
Add the Toshiba HD-A2 HD DVD player to your Shopping Cart along with either The Ultimate Matrix Collection or The Complete Matrix Trilogy on HD DVD. Then choose two HD DVDs from the list below and add both items to your cart and proceed to checkout. The price of the two HD DVDs you choose will be deducted from your order at checkout. (Applies only to products sold by Amazon.com. Does not apply to products sold on our site by third-party merchants or through third-party areas such as Amazon.com Marketplace, Auctions, or zShops.)
The other 5 HD DVDs are from the Toshiba 5-free-HD DVD offer.
$361 shipped: Toshiba HD-A2 HD DVD player, the Matrix trilogy, and 7 other HD DVDs
So basically, three-quarters of those who ordered from last year's 3 HD DVD deal have got them, but nobody has gotten the 5 HD DVDs from the newer deal from this year yet. Sloooww, and disappointing...Today's results of the Toshiba HD-DVD Offers (514-006 + 514-007)
I just checked this afternoon.
Out of the 3HD-DVD offer 514006, 77% of all submissions shipped out. 23% remain in processing/ready to ship status.
Out of the 5HD-DVD offer 514007, 100% remain with no data entry (no customer files created) yet. 0% processed + shipped out of over 6,000 submissions received. as soon as the paperwork is verified, there will be a customer file.
*Btw* if there is a customer file created already for this offer, it was already done through Customer Service when customer calls to check status, or the submission was unqualified. El Paso TX processing has only processed all of the unqualified letters to unqualified customers first.
also, from what i've noticed most HD-DVD shipments go out on fridays.
I'll be posting a new reply to this thread the day of Qualified Customer Data Entry for this promo to ease the concern of those who are still waiting to see if Toshiba will process these as advertised. (They will...)

For DVD, the Toshibas all have excellent upscalers as well. (You'll get upscaling over HDMI, but not component. Upscaling to 1080i over component is not permitted under the licencing.)

do blu-ray players play DVDs also?
i'm not sure what to buy yet. if blu-ray can't do DVD, i see that as a major bonus for HD-DVD players, but i hear most of the movie studios are for blu-ray, so yeah...guess i'll just wait some more.i guess i really don't need HD video yet, but would be nice.

it's up to you but the HD-DVD players have always been cheaper than Blu-ray players and will probably remain so. Walmart has ordered 1 million HD-DVD players which should be available in a few months that will sell for $200. there has been a huge spike in blu-ray sales lately because of all the people who bought the ps3.
however the average person is not going to spend $600 on a player. once people can buy these things for $200 or less expect to see a huge jump in the amount of people who own HD-DVD players. some movie studios may be exclusive now but they will definitely change their mind if there is enough demand for HD-DVD movies.
even if HD-DVD fails, there are still a lot of movies out now and a lot more will still come out in the next year or two. all of those movies will still be available and it's not like your hd-dvd player will stop working if the format war fails. every hd-dvd movie that you own will still work! i personally have an HD-DVD player and I love it.

So where is the $100 rebate?

So, it seems both Wal-Mart and Sam's Club are selling HD DVD players for $249 for a limited time. Good deal.
pontifex: Yes, both HD DVD and Blu-ray players play DVDs as well.
ElFenix: Actually, DVD was the fasted adopted format of all time when it was introduced. It was already well established before $100 players were commonplace at Wal-Mart. The $99 price point helped it kill off VHS more quickly, but it was already well on its way there before $99 was a common price for DVD.

P.S. I'm not sure I see what the problem is with firmware downloads. I've done such upgrades with various hardware many times.
