I feel your pain, but some people have indeed gotten their discs.
P.S. I'm not sure I see what the problem is with firmware downloads. I've done such upgrades with various hardware many times.
Some people tend to get careless or lazy to read its fine print and get burned in the process.
Upgrading the firmware with dvd/cd player needs an ISO burn disc to do so successfully.

Here is a more typical post regarding the free DVD offer as opposed to the one quoted above from the Toshiba rep who lurks that forum to put people off.
"I called just to see what the update was. Same thing. Your order is being processed and will be shipped shortly. I told the CSR that they have been telling me that now for months now, and that statement is not very assuring. I mean, what exactly is being processed? They have my name, address etc and they verify it everytime over the phone. They know what movies I want. I'm in the system, so what is there to process? I feel sorry for the poor people manning these phone calls because there are undoubtably people who will take out their frustrations on them.
Another thing, the lady I spoke to said that when my movies ship, that it would take 4-6 weeks to arrive. I don't understand how shipping can take 4-6 weeks in the continental USA. Is it being sent by pidgeon? I assume it's being sent by Media Mail, but how could it take that long? Almost June now. Winter, Spring and almost Summer now. I've basically been waiting almost 3 seasons for this offer. Utterly ridiculous to wait half a year for this. I've written this rebate off completely. I'm not calling to find out anything anymore, it serves no purpose, i'll get the same scripted answer about it being processed. Quite frankly, if I actually receive anything, i'll be pleasantly surprised. "
I am in the same boat as that poster as you will be if you think you are going to get your free DVDs without MAJOR frustration. If the $100 instant rebate is a good deal let that be sufficient. If you are going for the deal based upon the $100 AND the free DVDs (that you won't receive) then let the buyer beware.

I've seen it at CAD$399 from time to time, but yeah, even then the US price is more attractive. With the high Canadian dollar right now, CAD$399.99 is US$370.50.Originally posted by: mrrman
yeah but for the price $249US vs $499CDN...the US price is more attractive
The vast majority of TVs cannot accept 1080p inputs. For those TVs, it's pointless to have a 1080p player.Originally posted by: Nutdotnet
Am I missing something...what are you guys wanting to buy an HD-DVD player that can only go to 1080i/720p? Or am I wrong???

Both Electronics Expo through Amazon.com and TigerDirect.com have the HD-A2 for $250 as well now.
Amazon.com itself has it for $280 with free shipping.
BTW, the Toshiba HD-A2 is now the #1 selling DVD player at Amazon.com, beating out all the standard definition DVD players too.

A 1080i player is fine for most people. Furthermore, 1080i60 has ALL the information contained in a 1080p24 source, which means that if your TV's de-interlacer is a good one, it doesn't even need a 1080p player. It just extracts the 1080p24 information from the 1080i60 signal.
However, if you really want an HD DVD player that can output 1080p, then you have the option of the HD-A20 or the HD-XA2.
