I went to Safeway and saw some guys picking up the 100% Rubbing Alcohol used in hospitals and saying lines like
"dude, we're gonna get fu**ed up tonight"

Now... If u do mix it with half water, it will be about the same alcohol level as some drinking alcohols out there. My question is, is it safe? Can we really do that?

Can't you die if you drink just straight rubbing alchohol? Those guys are idiots, I assume they're underage and can't get real alcohol

AFAIK, stuff like antifreeze and rubbing alcohol is mixed with other toxins to make sure drunkards don't abuse the stuff. Probly a whole lot more to it then that though *shrugs*

I think they put a special chemical so you can't use it to get drunk, as it is poisonous.

ok, those guys are complete idiots, and I feel sorry for them. There is another alcohol mixed in with that stuff that will fvck you up, and not in a good way. Its sad to say, but those guys will either die, or go blind.

Ingestion:
Can cause drowsiness, unconsciousness, and death. Gastrointestinal pain, cramps, nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea may also result. The single lethal dose for a human adult = about 250 mls (8 ounces).

When I lived in Northern Arizona, I remember a guy on the reservation got wasted on Lysol. They found him melted to the seat in his truck after a week in the hot sun with the windows rolled up.

they are both alcohol.. but 100% alcohol in rubbing alcohol is illegal to sell to the public... they make it like 90% or somethign like that.. and put 10% poison into it... that way it prevents underage people from buying that adn drinking it... otherwise they would have to sell rubbing alcohol at liquor stores

Ethanol is the kind of alcohol produced by the fermentation of sugars. It is safe in moderation.

I know somebody who has a bottle of 150 proof whiskey.

You do realize that there are different types of alcohols, don't you?

alcohol is a generic name for a whole family of chemicals (namely those containing an OH bond). Ethyl alcohol is the kind that gets you drunk. Rubbing alcohol is isopropyl alcohol. Yes it is an alcohol (because it has an OH bond) but its molecular structure is totally different... therefore your body treats it differently.

No, they are not the same. The rubbing alcohol is isopropyl alcohol, drinkable alcohol is ethanol. Completely different molecular structures, completely different effects on a person. Isopropyl alcohol is poisonous. DO NOT DRINK IT!

grain alcohol is 190 proof... we get it all the time and mix large quantities of juice with it.. its reall ygood and gets you f'd up... and if you drank that straight.. or 100% rubbing.. not only will you get really really drunk.. you'd also dehydrate or dry your stomach and bad things will happen

anything that ends with a c-o-o-h (if i remember right from high school chemistry) is an alcohol, so you can guess how many bazillions of different types there are. isopropal, ethanol, buetonal (sp), etc.

The difference is the type of alcohol. Isopropyl alcohol (aka rubbing alcohol) is very harmful if it is ingested as others have said. I believe the type of alcohol in beer is different (ethyl?).

Alcohols are a class of organic compounds differentiated by the number of carbons they have. Methanol, or wood (huh huh wood) alcohol has one carbon. Ethanol has 2 carbons, Propanol has 3, and so forth.

They don't add stuff to rubbing alcohol or methanol to make them poisonous, they ARE poisonous.

BrunoPuntzJones:

C-O-O-H is a carboxyl group, I believe. I think the alcohols just have the O-H. But chem lab was a long time ago...

Oh the stupidity!

I think some of you kiddies might also like to know that the ethanol they have in college chemistry labs often has a little bit of methanol added to it, because the chemist's shop would otherwise need a liquor license to sell pure ethanol.

Yep! It's called denaturing, and basically ensures that anyone who tries to drink it is going to end up really really sick.
