Ethanol safe in moderation? Hahahha...yeah right. ~200mL of distilled ethanol will kill a grown man. Funny how you call isopropyl alcohol a poison, but not "drinkable" alcohol? Alcohol = poison, bottom line. Besides, nobody would drink straight up ethanol. Sure it would make you drunk, but it would taste like absolute fire. And the fatality factor is kind of bad too. Or you could make like the people during the Prohibition and drink methanol. It's about twice as toxic and if it doesn't kill you, it will blind you.

And as Shantanu said, pure ethanol would require a license, and is way more expensive.

Ethanol can be consumed in almost pure form (Everclear), but most of the stuff you'll find in laboratories is mixed with small amounts of other alcohols (denatured) to make you good and sick if you try to mix a Red Bull in it. I personally don't see the point with Everclear unless your fraternity is making hunch punch and wants to insure a large crop of wasted sorority chicks to choose from.:disgust:

The amount of false info on this thread is scary

Ethanol alcohol is the drinkable type in alcoholic drinks.

Isopropyl alcohol is usually the main ingredient in rubbing alcohol

Methanol alcohol is otherwise known as wood alcohol and is very dangerous.

People who claim that Isopropyl alcohol is toxic and ethanol is not do not have the slightest clue what they are taking about. BOTH are poisonous and while Isopropyl should not be ingested its lethal dose is about 8 ounces. Ethanol's is about 12 ounces.

Some people seem to be confusing Isopropyl with Methanol. Methanol is very toxic, even small amounts cause blindness and as little as an ounce can kill you.

By all means discourage people from drinking Isopropyl but please do so with facts, you can't claim that it is toxic while claiming that Ethanol is not. They are BOTH toxic. Ethanol is slightly less toxic and is an organic compound that the liver can easily metabolise. Isopropyl is not meant for ingestion (though is actually less damaging as a topical, which is why it is used for rubbing alcohol). The two biggest reason why Isopropyl should not be drunk recreationally is 1) its extra potency narrows the gap between getting drunk and lethal overdose 2) the liver metabolises it differently and creates acetone from it which is not harmful in small amounts but can cause problems in larger quantities, even below the lethal dosage.

Now denatured is a different story. Denatured alcohol means it has added poisons (often methanol) added to it. Both Iso and ethanol can be denatured if in forms that are not meant for drinking.

So please try to be clearer and more accurate with your info.
