2. "You may not make purchases that exceed the balance of funds available." Is that true? What if you want to buy some worth $200 and pay the balance with cash/Visa, etc.?

3. How does a clerk at the register know the balance on the card? When scanned does it show the balance?

Thanks.

1. no fee I saw
2. I used my $100 towards a $120 purchase, I paid the difference.
3. I'm sure the machine knows how much is in the card.

1) Are you sure? Maybe you're looking at the "maintenance fee" which is charged AFTER 6 MONTHS. Carefully re-read what you're looking at.

2) This depends on the cashier. Usually if you explain first "can you charge $100 on my credit card and I pay the $20 difference with cash?" They usually do not have a problem with this.

3) Their cc terminal will either APPROVE or DENY your transaction, trust me it knows. It does not reveal your balance to the cashier, it either works or does not.

I applied and was approved for the previous FREE $150 GC offer. I bought something for $200 at Best Buy, used $150 GC and paid the difference with $50 cash. No problems at all. When I got home I confirmed the balance was $0, shredded the card and threw it away.

Card should show up within a couple of weeks even if they can't make an instant decision. Assuming you have decent credit and aren't maxed out, natch.

Can you have two or more credit cards from the same credit card company?

Yes.

I have two CitiBank credit cards, and they keep sending me pre-approved cc offers!

Some card companies do check for duplicate cardholders. I once was denied a card for FirstUSA or something like that because I already had one even though it was a "branded" credit card.

It probably won't hurt your credit history to open new accounts.
However, closing credit cards is about the worst thing you can do. One way good credit is determined is by looking a the length of time you have had accounts open. If you close a credit card that you have had for 10 years, it hurts cause you lose the credibility of a long held account that was in good standing.

Anyways, if I were to get a new credit card... it would be best to look at the long term benefits.
Is there a % awarded as cash back?
Does it have gas rebates?
If you tend to carry a balance (shudder), then is it the lowest APR offered?

$100 up front may seem amazing. However, I have a CC that awards me 5% back at the pump. Every month I get around $5 back. After two years, that is over $120.

So look at what a new credit card can do for you in both the short and long term. Then made an informed decission.

There is this other offer, the one with the Free IPOD Shuffle on the same credit card. I did get the credit card through the IPOD offer. But there is no field in the application form that indicates what you want, either the $100 GC or the IPOD. How do I know what I will get? Can I now switch to the GC? I did call the customer service, but they put me on hold and went to sleep.

You'll probably get the iPod. The $100 offer is though a different link.

Received the gift card a few days ago. I've been a Schwab customer for years and it took a week to get approved. No instant decision for me.
