I once did something like this for a class, though I only covered the changes in territory of the Byzantine Empire. I have no idea what happened to that slideshow, but it was pretty interesting to see the way an entire civilization grew and shrank over the centuries.

...and in the next 1000 yrs, all of Europe will be the Islamic State.

This is such obvious bait I almost didn't bother, but this is super easy so why the hell not.

Watch the animation again and tell me what happens every single time any one color of blob gets to be really large.

Spoiler: It either erodes or collapses outright within a few generations. Worst case scenario: Jihadis pull a Ghengis and one to two hundred years later it's like it never even happened.

The modern era has revolutionized warfare and how humans tend to behave. Yes, our nature is just as vile... but our methods are... evolved. Look to cultural and social conquest to arrive before military conquest. We become eroded from within first.

We are stronger militarally so a direct approch is no longer feasible. So foreign... entities... take a more subtle tact in dealing with us. And us, being the loving carebears that we are, open our door to them.

Whatever they do with it after the natives are gone, does not matter.

So interesting that we place such intense value on these passing logistical/geopolitical arrangements.

Hitler dun goofed. He almost had the world there for a minute (edit: second). One does not simply invade Russia though.

It's disgusting that those lines changing all represent hundreds of millions of peoples lives. Mostly because some leaders wanted more land than they could already even come close to using. Most of those people probably just wanted to live a nice quiet and peaceful life and go about enjoying things they like and raising families and growing old.

Quite a lot of them changed just because someone married someone.

We need war to keep the population in check.

Yeah, the dates are all messed up.
I also must have completely missed Napoleon's eastward expansion.

On the other hand, it played a strong role in the advancement of society where stronger cultures quickly permeate through societies with weaker cultures. However, modern military is far too deadly to continue the trend.

I wouldn't say it's too deadly, unless you massively use weapons of mass destruction against civilian targets. It's mostly too expensive. Back in the day you mostly lost soldiers and conscripted, today you lose a lot of gear, and the few people that know how to handle that gear.
But then, infantry still plays the main role even in todays war. Which is why there's a constant drive to better protect infantry, until we can finally get a semi-robotic replacement (propulsion still makes this properly unlikely).

But yeah, war hasn't gotten much more or less bloody. It's gotten less protracted, so more people are likely to die in a shorter interval, but overall roughly the same amount of people die. Wars just don't take a hundred years anymore.

soldiers were so expensive to train and equip in 1700 that armies rarely met on the battlefield. they were too costly to risk.
