I'd use this long spool to run long installations. (No more than 100m ever though....cat5e limit).

If you are thinking about making your own shorter cables, be sure to get the connectors on right. You'd be suprised at how much speed you loose to lowsy cables.

All cat5e and cat6 cable kinks if it gets in a loop and you pull. I worked with AMP and Burtek cable all this summer wiring UCSD and if you were careless and it kinked it wouldnt perform as well on the tests.

You mean Berktek??? We used Berktek Lanmark 2000 cat6 cable to wire our new house.

Rule of thumb I learned was to not bend it anymore than a can of beer...

I hopped on this deal a few months ago. Very useful for making odd length cables.

I ordered this a year ago and never got around to using it. If there's anybody in the San Francisco that wants an unopened box, let me know via e-mail. I'll let it go for $40.

Cheers,
Thomas

For those that can't wait (like me), you can get a 1000' spool at Fry's for 29.99. I checked the compgeek's site yesterday and it was OOS. Oh well.

I purchased this setup a year or so ago. The cable I received is a fine quality and has been used in long runs (100+ feet) in my house successfully. I use an Ideal crimper and RJ45 connectors (from another hot deal - remember the $175 off $200 at Qwestlink or netbuyer). The tester simply confirms continuity but is still a nice touch. I like it.

It is a two part tester, a sources and a receiver. The tester cycles through the pairs and you confirm light sequence at other end to verify that you got it wired up correctly.

I've purchased several spools of Genica cable over the years, and it works fine for non-plenum installations. The crimpers are a pile of crap though, so don't waste your time with them.

Good deal, too bad I already have a crimper (radio sham charges $30 alone for it) and dont really need cable right now.

I am always tempted by this deal when I go look for crimpers alone. Anyone know why almost all crimpers are $30? It looks like a $5-10 tool.

Can anyone speak to the quality of the crimper?

It is a great deal. The crimper sucks though. It won't even crimp one cable good.
Get yourself a belkin crimper for $20 from circuit city.

Been looking also, but company needed cables immediately so bought locally. Oh well as long as I get reimbursed

This is a good deal since the extras is probably atleast $20 worth and $35.96 for the cable alone is a good deal.

I posted this deal about a year ago, when i got in on it Probably my first hot deal, too.

The crimper is cheap, but mine has been working fine for the last year. I've run up to 100 ft. with this set, price was the same a year ago, comes back often. No problems so far, though bending the cables does cause problems, for sure.

Incidentally, this cable is greased, so you can pass it through tight cabling situations without too many problems.

Tester is simple, but does the job when you need to figure out of your home-made cable is suspect or not. They used to have a $100 setup with cat 6 cable, premade patch cables, keystones, and some other goodies, and a $56 or so set with cat6.

Shipping's always a pain for a box that heavy, though. That's a LOT of cable.

Dave.
