Anand reviews Vertex LE

Supposedly the controller is a SandForce SF-1500 and not the lower end SF-1200, though the PCB is for the SF-1200 (missing the super cap). Don't know why the published read/write is a hair lower than the SandForce SF-1200 drives, but supposedly it can really hammer out the random writes.

Anyways, supposedly OCZ is only making 5000 of these, so if you want a SandForce based drive with the $/GB of Intel drives, grab 'em while they're hot!

If these were flashable to the new 120gb variants I would purchase right now.

Limited edition hardware? Is this a new trend, or have I just not noticed it?

Also, just to give you crap, based you your recommendations in the other thread...wouldn't you be better off spending 2/3 the price for 8/10 the storage and get an intel 80GB g2? Or is the performance difference between the sandforce 1500 and intel controllers enough to justify the difference is $/GB?

Not intending to thread crap, just (trying) to bust your chops.

plus OCZ's reputation recently has gone down the gutter... wouldn't trust it at all!

Hasn't Anand himself had multiple issues with OCZ drives lately? At $300 this drive is priced where it should be. The old $429.00 price was just asinine.

I'd probably go for 2 intel 40gbs in RAID over this. Cheaper, faster, and only slightly less space.

LOL

As you go down in size with the Intel drives, performance goes down. Read performance stays similar between the 80GB and 160GB, but write performance drops some. Intel drives already have the lowest write performance, so it becomes a less viable choice with the smaller drives.

Looking at the benchmarks the LE definitely seems like one of the best ssds available. But I'm not good at understanding the benchmarks; is 3x the write speeds a noticeable difference? And at least for boot drives, the more "important" numbers are random read/write, right?

That being said, if I was building a new machine with a respectable budget I would seriously consider this drive at this price.

Based on the benchmarks alone it a very good deal. It is substantially faster than Intel and the price difference with 80GB G2 per 1GB is only 25%.

On the other hand reading OCZ support forum for SandForce SSDs gives me a pause. There are so many reports of drives dying unexpectedly and not gradual change but sudden, complete outage with the drive not recognized by BIOS. Considering that OCZ is making only 5000 of these drives they should keep at least half in reserve for replacement.

I like the idea of having the best performing drive in the segment but the risk is too high based on user reports. Probably we need to wait 6-12 months for SandForce to iron out all kinks in firmware before we can rely on these drives.

Apparently the 50 gig is this afternoon's shell shocker. It's already priced at $175, so I wonder what it will drop to. I'm going to guess $145.

Probably more expensive than the Vertex shell shocker from last week (2 weeks ago?), but without the hassle of a rebate. I'm guessing performance would be similar to the 100 gig?

Do you have a link to this weeks shell shocker deals? For some reason I didn't get one in my inbox. I got in on the 60 gig SDD deal last week and I wish I had bought 2. I got 2 of the 1055t / MSI motherboard Fry's deal and I now need another SDD.

I'm not sure if there is a link for it, but if you pm me your email I'll forward it to you.

As for the drive itself, supposedly it's only going to be $10 off, which would bring the total price to $165. Not that great, as far as I'm concerned.

I got the last OZ sdd for $149 - $20 mir, and it is a 60 gb drive, so yea, if it is only $10 off, it isn't worth the purchase yet. Thanks for the info.
