100HZ refresh rate ruins monitor?

I have a Dell P991 Flat Trinitron monitor. I've been running at 1024x768@85Hz since i got it and I'm noticing flickering (most evident on white backgrounds).. so I upped it to 100Hz and the flickering seems to be gone.. However, I posted this problem on Dell's forum and I was told that i should leave it at 85Hz, because I will ruin the monitor in the long run if I leave it at 100Hz.... is this true? Should i set it back to 85?

Well, the higher the Hz the harder the monitor has to work. This is the same with resolution. What size is the P991? If it's a 19" then running 1024x768 at 100 Hz shouldn't be too much of a problem if you don't like 85 Hz.

If you REALLY want to lengthen your monitor's life, run it @60Hz. I run my 17" monitor at the max supported refresh rate for each resolution. Running 800x600 @ 144Hz right now.

Wow, you should try running a higher resolution. On my Sony G400 (almost the same monitor as yours) I'm running 1600x1200 at 75 Hz (85 Hz has weird problems). I'd run 1280x960 minimum with that monitor.

Thanks for the tips guys. Degauss doesn't fix the flickering problem at 85 HZ.. It appears more evident on the left side of the screen. I'm just running it at 100Hz right now.. i don't detect any flickering. I just run it at 1024x768 because everything is so small at higher resolutions and my bro starts complaining that it's hard to read. lol.

You might want to go into the display settings and change the font size..I think I remember doing that when I went to 1600x1200 resolution.
