I was making $7.35/hr in Oct. 99 (the join date in my profile) doing data entry while in college. I graduated six months after that and made $12/hr doing website tech support.

I was happy doing it. I knew it was a good entry level starting point.

Many college grads these days don't want to do that. They want the $100K job right after graduation.

I can tell you, $100K can go a long way in the midwest.

The biggest factor is likely location. I'm in FL, the cost of living + pay here is very low compared to say the pac west, or new england. My buddy in Seattle doing something similar is making $140k. Now to be fair, my title is probably over-glorified and my job is lax. I rarely develop code any longer, I run a team of 5 programmers below me, and we don't program per se, but throw together scripts to process data interfaces in SAS, or write queries to do data analysis. It's not like actual back end dev in C, C++ etc. or front end programming in a big java or javascript-ish type language, or BI.

I have had some offers this year for around 100k-110k to move downtown, but the traffic and travel time, plus lack of WFH flexibility just isn't worth it to me. Like I mentioned earlier, I'm up for a promotion in the 90-100k range, so that will keep me satiated for a couple years. I'll re-evaluate again in a bit. Everything I have is paid off, I can afford decent vacations every couple months, and I'm working hard on my investments, so I've kind of hit a certain comfort level.

To be clear, in my initial post I wasn't incredulous that so many people/jobs could make $100k+, it's just that I don't visit OT very often and generally just view most of you guys as silly, so didn't really expect those poll results. My apologies

Sounds like me almost word for word. I'm not willing to give up WFH and lax reporting I do now. Could I go into a office and make 20% more? Without a doubt but I wouldn't even consider it for less than probably 40%.

I've never been to either place, but aside from the cost, I hear nothing but good things about Vancouver. I wish we had a good analogue here in the US. I guess Juneau is like a tiny version.
Yeah I do love it here. I didn't really realize how much I appreciated trees and mountains until I no longer had them. Family and friends too of course.

Portland is kind of similar to Vancouver. I really like Portland.

How can you justify this blind assertion?

100k might be a bit high but the 2015 graduates' expectations were notably off what 2013 and 2014 graduates experienced.

Reports for the 2015 class show that 39% make below $25k for their first job. Thats right in line with 2013 and 2014 meaning their expectations were clearly misplaced. Granted 2016 was a better year for graduates but the rates of working outside your degree are increasing as well. Starting offers were up about 3% for 2016 graduates - a good change but not really anything game changing especially considering their tuition probably increased by about the same amount

I take issue mainly with the notion that new grads don't want to work up from the bottom. That's not what I've seen, anecdotally, and it simply reeks like a "let's hate on young people" trope.

Well, anecdotally, I've seen many who have some pretty odd illusions about how much they should be making and what work they should be doing. Both our company and our clients have decently sized intern programs and hire extensively from the college grad pool. I don't hate on them for it - I think it stems from a lot of PR fluff around college degrees. Its slowly changing but they are fed a lot of lines about how they will make more money with a degree and how they can only be successful with a degree. The first part isn't wrong, its just never spelled out that its over a really long period of time and what that really translates into. So they leave with expectations that don't match up well with reality and thats easily supported by the graph above.

I have nothing to support the following part but it seems worse the more acclaimed the university is. We work with several in the Top 20 Public Universities list and their grads, IMO, have less realistic expectations than the ones we get\work with from those lower on the list or community colleges.

I read that whole link, ouch. I cant imagine paying that much. Renting a closet to live in, wtf. I guess they can get trapped there, feeling like they have to work there. I would seriously look at moving away like the guy did to San Diego. That bubble can burst again. It is amazing to me seeing the house prices watching some of the house flipping shows, just crazy.

On a personal note, got a raise this week, will get another on March 31st and yet another on August 15th. Be sitting pretty good afterwards.

Are kids not working jobs while in HS these days? I started working when I was 12 and had jobs all through high school. You would think if they were holding down part time jobs they'd already have a reality check.

^^

I have worked since I was 16, that still did not prepare me for the salary shock when I left university as a less-than-stellar student.

Yeah, you have to balance out your salary and your desire to live in popular places. $100k will go a long way in the Midwest, but to be honest, unless you're from the area, it's not really that awesome of a place to live. High demand areas are in high demand for a reason. You've got to decide if you'd rather have a lot of nice things and vacations or if you'd like to be able to feel like you're on vacation when you're not at work.

That balance point is different for different people. I'm trying to find it myself.

I can't really speak to trends when I was in HS vs now but I was surprised how many we see who have never had a job before. We have a very relaxed dress code but I had to tell one male intern that a white tank top was not appropriate in a customer facing position. We thought one quit when they stopped showing up. They returned to work the next week, having taken a vacation in Mexico without informing us. I know that last minute cancellations for tests and quizzes are common among our clients. They'll get emails\texts 30 minutes before a shift is supposed to start saying they have a test - never mind that the test was scheduled months in advance. And there is also the expectation they have for a salary while in school vs once they have the magical piece of paper.

What is your job title and how old are you (ignore the age part if you are scared, I know most of you guys are over 13 years old) Did you go to university? Is your degree relevant to your field?

I can't believe most of you guys/gals here are earning 100k. WTF do you do?????????????????? I thought you guys still camping upstairs your mama's basement playing video games all day!!!!!

So it seems everyone here is managers, CEOS, manager assistants and managers pet. Dare I say you guys/gals probs gave manager sexual act for a pay rise, that won't surprise me.

Please vote poll if possible and be honest.

Bringing this topic back up - would you guys take more money (say $20k+) in exchange for not liking the daily work as much but in the same field? All else is equal. Those who've done it, do you regret it or would do it again?

Gotta love the government. I just got a .15 raise. I'm pretty sure the administrative costs to implement it cost more than the increase.

No, I think you need to enjoy your job. Maybe not love it, but enjoy it. Or else you would just be miserable. Possibly if it was like a 2x pay bump, one could suffer for awhile. But I have been not happy at a job, and eventually the money just is not worth it and moved on.

But speaking of more money for possibly less happiness. Pretty much a sure thing that next year we will receive about a $6 per hour pay bump, for them lowering our short and long term disability. Currently we get 100% of our pay for 4 months in short term, and 70% indefinitely for long term. Probably going to lower it to 80% and 60% as that is what they did at another site last year. Our union contract is up this August and they are about to start talks for a new one.I am fine with that as I never, ever use it. Rather have the pay bump. A lot of other people are not happy about it, we'll see what happens.

I just got a $1.31 raise Feb 22nd, get a $1.35 raise 24th of this month, and a .90 raise August 15th for cost of living. Gov can be good for sure.

No. Absolutely love my job right now and the extra $20k doesn't matter much ultimately.

Yeah doing the math it only comes out to maybe $11k in a year. A $40k bump would be $23k which is more significant. I do have a tendency to want big toys.
