100mbps hub, but transfers are 10mbs?

I recently bought a 10/100 hub and I have two computers hooked up to it, both have 10/100 NICs. But when I transfer files through my FTP program, the speeds barely break 900k/s. Shouldn't they be 9000k/s?

you could probably expect 6MB/s from a hub and it's possible you could see 10. You know the difference betwean a megabit and a megabyte right? Networks are usually rated in megabits. Divide by 8 and you can get a theoretical transfer rate.

Is the 'k/s' that you have KiloBits or KiloBytes.

I believe the 10/100 is a MegaBits/sec rating. If it's the later than factor up by x8 or factor down the hub rating (1.25/12.5) to compare.

If it's the former, then . . . I dunno.

whether it's 900 kilobytes or kilobits, he is still getting way less then he should. I don't know what software you are using now to test with but I would try something else like netcps or netio32.

I thought it would be clear that:

k = kilobit
kb = kilobyte

Right now I'm running the same speed as a 10baseT hub, which isn't what I put my money down for! Both machines are running Win2k and in the network connection properties, the cables ARE connected at 100mbps.

I'm testing the speed by means of an FTP program, I have one setup on the main computer and used the other computer to transfer files. In the FTP client it was hovering at 950-970k/s but it never went above, just like my old 10baseT hub.

superbaby,

Try the following:

In your network cards properties, if its set to auto hard set it to 100Mbit FDX (Full duplex). This is almost always a negotiating problem, or a network driver issue. Make sure your network drivers are up to date as well. Use Netcps to bench them its a lot more effective than ftp.

Zuni,

Does hubs support full-duplex? I though only switches do. Anyway,if the hub and the NIC are different brands, usually the best setting for the NIC is auto-select or auto negotiation.

I just ran NetCPS...

Client connected from 192.168.0.183
---> CPS 11521533.00 KPS: 11251.50 MPS: 10.99
Avrg CPS 11506376.00 KPS: 11236.70 MPS: 10.97
Peek CPS 11546342.00 KPS: 11275.72 MPS: 11.01
Client disconnected. 104857600 Kb transferred in 9.11 seconds.

Is this what I'm supposed to get?

Edit: Just noticed the "hub" was a switch as well

You won't see 100 mpbs if you're using a hub...you'd only see that with a switch.
I'm not totally sure on this, but from what I understand this is how hubs and switches work:

A hub essentially "splits the bandwidth" between ports.
If you have 5 ports on a 100 mbps hub, each port will be alotted 20 mbps.

100/#ports = most bandwidth each port will get.

A switch has the added technology of giving more bandwidth to ports that are in use. So if only two ports are connected and one is sending and the other receiving, each one will get 100 mbps.

I may be wrong on some of this, but I think thats generally how things work.

As for your 900k/s cap when you should be getting 2000k/s, drivers and settings are where the problem would be. Make sure you set the NIC to run at 100mbit full duplex.

Thanks for the info on the hub and switches

I just set the NICs yesterday to 100 FDX yesterday and I ran NetCPS again but the same results as above. Are those results what I should be getting?

I think that sounds right... you are getting over 10mbs which indicates your settings are right.. remember that typical ethernet cable maxes at 10mbs and you also bottleneck with your HD read times

10 mbit will let u send stuff at like 1 MB a second. (10/8 is 1.25 MB but you have a 10-20% overhead)
100 will let you send at like 10 MB a second.

hub sends all signals to all ports, whereas a switch only sends it to the correct port. HOWEVER, the max 1 way speed on a hub should equal a swich (+ or - 5%)

If your network is configured properly, and your cabling is up to snuff, then you should be able to transfer at at least 80% of 100Mbps. Try connecting your 2 PC's with a well-made or storebought crossover cable. Then perform your Netcps test. Compare the results to the ones you got through the switch.

Yes, that's how I'm used to seeing it, but my FTP program and NetCPS were using different conventions.
Thanks though

So... 10 MPS = 10baseT speeds correct?
While I should be getting somewhere between 60-70 MPS?

Send a file over ICQ, it will report in KB's a sec. 700 KB = 10baseT. 7000KB = 100baseT.

I'm sure all the people that know how networks are rated and the difference between a bit and a byte are laughing right now......

The above results are very good for a 100 Megabit per second network (that's how netowrk hardware is rated--in BITS). 1 Byte = 8 Bits so if you devide 100 by 8 and subtract your overhead, you are getting just about right (higher then I get with my switch and full duplex).

I will run NetCPS on my 10baseT network at my mom's place and see what speeds I get there...
