It doesn't look nearly as good with that amount of light. I wouldn't bother if you're going to have to watch with a light on in the same room as it.

Basically the darker it is the better it looks.

We have some room darkening curtains that we use for daytime watching and that works well.

What you should do is make a square room and make the walls out of some kind of very white material. Then, hanging from a holder in the ceiling in the center of the room, have 4 of those projectors with one facing each wall. Then play a game and have a 360 degree view set on it. It'd be like VR.

Here ya go. Still building my rear riser....as you can see....you can get more info about my setup at mackiecinema.com (stupid site, but fun)

Nice screen. I'm not really a fan of the DVD and THX lighting, and I think I prefer couches to the movie theatre style seats, but you've got a nice setup.

Sanyo PLV-Z4 Projector - $1700
Carada 126inch Screen - $1100
Onkyo SR800 - $1000
Energy Speakers 7.1 setup - $3000
Velodyne 12 inch Sub - $1500
Berkline Home Theater Seats $1800
2nd row of seats - 1000
Cables + Monster Signature Series Power Center - $1000

total: $12100 - Retail.....I probably paid about $7k-8k.....(via lots of friends and contacts)

I built it over 3 years.....the projector and seats were done this year......

The Velodyne Sub is amazing, and makes the whole system...it's so amazing......worth every penny. It's set to 3 out of 10 on volume, and is so loud and clean it's rediculous.

The DVD/THX signs were something I wanted to see how they would look in person, they aren't really expensive $30 shipped on ebay. They look really good in person however.

I wanted the seats in the back, and a couch up front, but the problem became not having enough seating for people when they came over. The front seats were such a great deal for $1000 delivered full leather, and they are SOOO comfty......(I can play 360 for 5-6 hours and never get up)

The berklines are VERY NICE and the power recline is a major plus. Once I finish the other risers, and carpet them, then finish the wiring it will all look great.

Nicely done YoYo
The one thing I dislike about projectors is that there are some things I just don't want to watch in a pitch black room, so you need to have another TV for that. Sports, for example, are much better when you're watching with buddies and chatting while watching a big screen; a pitch black room kind of kills the atmosphere for those situations.

I can't disagree with you there....it's very true....

But if you do your lighting properly you can backlight your room without affecting the screen......

But for movies, games and TV, the projector is amazing. I have a 57 inch big screen in the living room for daytime TV viewing (although I have blacked out the theater room so it doesn't matter)

Good thing I don't watch sports then

I meant Soundman.

Not that I have any control over it, but what do you think it should be changed to?

YOyo how much did that screen cost, just for the blackout cloth?

I want to put it in perspective, since Mackie stated his 126" Carada screen cost $1100. Thanks.

I don't remember exactly how much the fabric cost. I should have kept better records. I think it was around $6 a yard or something, so I think I spent about $25 on the blackout cloth.

The wood and brackets and screws for the blackout cloth frame was about another $25.

The velvet was the expensive purchase at about $85.

Magnets were $15.

The foam was about $15.

I probably spent another $10 on random materials like hot glue, nails, tape, etc.

So what's that?

About $175 total?

(I know you just wanted to know the BOC, but I thought I'd give a total estimate while I was at it)

Thanks a lot. $175 and some elbow grease sounds a lot better than $1100 especially after shelling out 1500-3k on a good projector.

On that same note, I looked at the page linked that tells you how far away to place which projector per screen size, etc.

I then clicked on the Top Projectors for Home Theater, and for 720p projectors a few fell in that $1500 dollar range. Have you had any experience with any of those models, and would they be worth it in your opinion?

This is something I have wanted to do for a while, and I might be able to do finally in about a year. I would much rather go the projection route over a plasma/LCD unit, and having a very sharp picture is definitely a top priority for me.

One more quick question for now.

The border and masking system you are using, is basically a flat piece of foam board covered in black velvet that you border your screen with to help absorb excess light bleeding over the edge of the screen right?

Have you ever tried something maybe like the concept of projecting your screen into a shoe box style frame, obviously larger though, and having that be coated in the same black. I noticed that there is still some bleed over, so I am curious if something like my simple diagram below might work. Thanks.

The Panasonic AE900U that I got for $1499 AR fits into your range and I'm quite happy with it.

If I were buying right now, I would seriously look at the 720p DLP Optoma that just came out. Is it called the HD70? (I'd look it up but I have to leave for class in about a minute)

Oh, I have no idea. I was hoping someone else would think of that.

I look at it the other way....I paid $1700 for my Sanyo, I'd really prefer a professional quality screen with Aircraft Aluminum frame that I can EASILY break down to remove if I need to.

the $1100 was well worth it......trust me. Some people like to do things on the cheap, the screen was not something I was willing to go cheap on.

I was thinking about this issue a lot when Jello was working on the screen, and I asked a lot of questions along the way. We've already moved with the basic screen that he made this summer-- it's very lightweight and travelled very nicely in the moving van. Installation of that just involved some picture frame hanging supplies (as far as I recall). I was initially worried about the border and how easy it would be to move, but he said that the plan for removing it is just to cut at the point where the backs that are nailed into the wall meet the back of the screen. Everything else is salvageable and very moveable and shouldn't be too difficult to reinstall.
