A projector,
a screen,
and a sense of scale?

Actually, YoYo, I have to commend you and your project. My setup is nearly the same as yours. I'm running the AE900U , a blackout cloth screen, and an SVS woofer. That guy can be seen in the third picture. There are two main differences, however.

1) My black border is wood, as you mentioned some are.
2) My screen is a whopping 110 INCHES!!! 102"? Child's play!

Suck on that, Jello! MWA HA HA HA HA!!!!

is there a ratio? how far away the projector has to be from the screen to get a certain image size?

http://www.projectorcentral.com/Panason...T-AE900U-projection-calculator-pro.htm

so, you have to choose a projector first either based on feature set etc and then figure out the distance you have to work with in the room you are going to put it in and THEN build the screen right?

something like that? i'm interested in doing a project like this also. any recommendations for a projector?

Yeah, I like the idea of researching a projector, buying it, and then figuring out exactly what size screen you like based on the throw distance and seating distance before getting the screen done.

If you're awesome at planning and know what kind of viewing angle you want, you could do it all at once, but I found the steps method easier.

I'm at about 40 degrees for my viewing angle. http://www.myhometheater.homestead.com/viewingdistancecalculator.html

There are a lot of good projectors.

What's your pricerange?

the panasonic you have looks pretty good.

i have a really really large room in my house i think would be perfect for this. i'm going to take out the carpet and put in a hardwood floor tho, that's not good for home theaters right?

thing is, we are getting a baby grand piano for that room. the room is 15' by 25'. the one 15' wall is a outside wall with windows and the other 15' wall is completely empty. we are going to put the piano in front of the window, so if i put the projector on the wall above the window, i would have a nice distance i can work with.

again, how are hardwood floors for home theaters tho?

also raptor, your couches are like 6 feet away from a 110" screen. seems a lil too close for my liking ...

By the standards "they" set out, yes, my viewing distance is way too short for the screen size. However, that setup is the way I prefer it. I'm not overly sensitive to the infamous "screen door" effect for which LCD projectors are known so the distance doesn't bother me much. I do notice pixelation every once in a while but considering I can make myself motion sick playing games, I'd say it's a fair trade!

Plus, I could always make the image smaller...

Jello:

My pictures were taken right after I moved in and built the screen. I do have a masking system in place now which, coincidentally, also uses magnets and felt. I stretched my felt over simple wire frames. They're extremely light. I feel like we may have been reading the same forums.

I do have a center channel, yes. Is it in that picture? No. Is it a Paradigm Reference CC-570 to match the Studio/100's? Yes, yes it is!

Now it's time to see about separate amps and preamps...

Caradas are a great value...whenever I settle down somewhere and jump for the FP setup, I'll just be spending the dough on a Stewart though. Yes, I throw money around sometimes.

how are these screens. http://www.carada.com?

Much like everything else in home theater, your preference in screens is just that - your preference. Carada certainly makes a quality product but so do Da-Lite, Stewart, and others (such as Jello and myself!). You'd be best off either demoing as many screens as possible to find what you like or going the complete opposite direction and just buying one which fits your size and budget requirements. Quite frankly, you're going to be happy with almost anything. The differences between most screens are quite subtle especially when you don't have a lot of viewing experience with them.

Looks like the screen I made a year ago, but I didn't paint the black bars. Good job

Unbelievable job, Yoyo, though I wouldn't expect any less. I just finished watching my neighbors 63" Fujitsu plasma, and I'm jealous .

hahah very ghetto.

I want to build one in a extra room in my basement. just been far to busy to build it. not to mention also expensive heh

While it does look kinda shady, in the long run, once the lights are off and people see the huge picture it produces, the fact that the screen is nothing but a piece of blackout cloth hanging from some hooks in the wall is quickly forgotten

Without carpeting you're going to have more surfaces for the sound to reflect off of, but I wouldn't let that stop you from doing it anyway . If the room is really large and your speakers are away from walls you'll miss (or at least diminish) some of the other reflection points.

I haven't really gotten into researching room treatments and such since we've been constantly moving to different locations so I don't want to have too much invested in physical installation stuff. This screen is by far the most permanent thing I've built for the theater. Luckily the wall was already full of nail holes so I don't think they'll mind too much when they find a bunch more when we move out eventually

Well I'm glad you have those other components. Time for updated pics then, isn't it?

Awesome job. I am in the market for a new TV setup and have been looking at LCDs and Plasmas, however I really like the projector setup you have and now I that to think about!

Grrr. . . so much wants, so little money.
