Well I work for Dish Network so I can flesh out the details on this deal a bit. The particular deal he is talking about is available in two flavors one of them being the Free Dish PVR promotion and the other being the Digital Home Plan PVR promotion. The way the Free Dish PVR promotion works is that you pay $249 for the PVR and get a $49 credit on your first bill making it $200 although there may be something different going on with the retailers, direct offers can differ from them. The Digital Home Plan is different from the Free Dish in that you pay a $99 activation fee if you want to get a PVR on the account and you get a $49 credit on your first bill. One major difference between the two however is that as long as you are a Dish Network customer and a Digital Home Plan customer your equipment is always under warranty. You do pay an extra fee for Digital Home Plan however, at $5 a receiver for the In Home Service Plan and you do NOT own the equipment, you basically rent it. There are some definite advantages namely, if a receiver breaks (hey it happens, not much but it does) and it was not caused by the customer or an act of god, infestation, etc. then it will be replaced at no charge. There are some other advantages to it as well, lmk if you want more details or go to
www.dishnetwork.com (God I'm starting to sound like an advertisement here ) .
Insofar as the 3 free months is concerned it basically works only with the Free Dish and Digital Home Plan promotions. You sign up for the America's Top 100 with HBO & Cinemax at $49.99 a month. You receive 3 credits of $49.99, one for each month. Keep in mind it does not cover things like additional outlet fees (more than one receiver), taxes, pay per views or the In Home Service Plan fees for the Digital Home Plan.
Now, onto the PVR receivers in question. If at all possible I would advise to go through a retailer for either promotion. Reason being that it is possible to get 1 of 2 differenet receivers the 501 or the 508. The only difference between the two is hard drive capacity, the 501 has a 36 gigabyte hard drive and I believe the 508 has an 80 gigabyte. If you buy direct we can't guarantee which one you'll get so if you want to be sure you're getting the larger capacity model go retail. Both are nice units and do a good job of recording and various other functions. One thing to keep in mind is that these are not dual tuner models, meaning you cannot watch one thing and record another on the PVR. If you want to do something like that you'll need to purchase a 721 and I'm not currently aware of any promotions on it although retailers may be doing some I suppose.
