1080 Ti? Wait for Vega? Curious what you guys think.

Surprised by how "cheap" the 1080 Ti is relative to the increase in performance from the 1080 and am considering it for this newly built rig. Wanted to wait for Vega initially though. I know all we have are vague rumors at this point. Do they seem to point to Vega being better? Just cheaper? (A LOT cheaper?) Am I just dumb and should just save a ton of money on a vanilla 1080? I play at 3440X1440.

The community collectively agrees that Vega will cost more or less or the same as the 1080 Ti and will be faster or slower or perform the same.

Anything else is up in the air.

Wait if you can bear to wait, buy now if you want better performance now.

Get a 1080 TI. There is always going to be a better card around the corner so you could be waiting forever. At the resolution you're playing at, you will definitely want to get a 1080 Ti to get 60+ fps.
Also, I highly doubt Vega is going to have Ti performance. It is likely going to trade blows with the 1080 but I could be wrong.

Depends on a few things. Does your monitor have Freesync? If it did I'd be inclined to wait to use the feature. If it doesn't it's pretty much up to you. My guess is that Vega wont match OC 1080 Ti so if you bought an aftermarket one today I dont think you will be surpassed until Volta.

Wait for Vega. Anyone telling you to buy a 1080ti without seeing what is coming is giving terrible advice. If Vega is faster prices will drop on the 1080ti. I suppose if it's a life and death situation for you then you cannot wait, but i doubt if that is your situation.

After Vega comes out, should we start telling people to wait for Volta, too?

There's always something new coming -- at some point, you just need to buy the product that suits your needs and is available now.

That's a big IF. In the meantime people who have 1080 Tis are enjoying unsurpassed performance for months while those who are waiting are not. 1080 Tis also OC very well and I doubt Vega is beating a 2k+ OC 1080Ti.

2k+ OC 1080Ti

Where are those at? I've only seen people saying they have been limited to under 2k.

Paying the 1080 Ti premium right now is silly unless you really need that performance. It won't last longer than the 1080 and has no architectural improvements over it even though it was released almost a year later.

It offers worse price/perf over the 1080 and like everyone said, Volta will be out in a year and be faster for much cheaper and lower power draw. So it would make more sense to buy a 1080, sell it and buy the x80 volta. You'd have more performance than the 1080 Ti for less power

Mine is running at 2125/6000

Think you misunderstood the point..
Only 1080TI's out now, are the founders tax edition, and non of those will sustain anything close to "2k+ OC" by itself.

Checking in at 2100mhz here. Waiting for Vega is ridiculous. Its going to compete with 1080 most likely and no way will it squash the aftermarket 1080ti's or watercooled FE editions. If you are waiting for anything, wait for an aftermarket 1080ti.

If Volta was 2 months out at the time of Vega release. But it isn't.

Here in lies the crux of the matter: "and I doubt Vega is beating a 2k+ OC 1080Ti". Which we won't know until Vega is released. But if it does, those 1080tis will be priced lower than they are now.

Thanks all. I need to wait for a bit regardless as no one seems to have one in stock (and I refuse to pay ebay price gouge prices). Though if someone here knows where I can get one for msrp, I'm game.

I am expecting VEGA to be as fast as GTX 1080 or 10-15% tops and priced $499-$549
GTX 1080 Ti will still be faster but it is also more expensive.
At 3440x1440 GTX 1080 Ti will keep you going for at least 2+ years without the need for an upgrade.

If you can wait, then wait till May for VEGA to see how is performance, if you need a card now, GTX 1080 Ti is a beast.

I play at 3440X1440.
Since he's playing at 4K

He is playing at 21:9 1440 not 4k. It is just over half the resolution. Hence my question, does he need the extra performance or not for the games he plays and settings he wants? Because its a worse price/perf, and the aftermarket cards seem to be priced even higher, and the FE editions will either require replacing the cooler or dealing with very loud cards in order to run even their base boost clock of 1700, let alone getting anywhere near 2ghz.

Amazing that so many people replaced their cooler with water cooling but don't factor that into their pricing... $700 + $100+ WC != $700 card...

Never in AMD's (or ATI's) history have they made up this type of performance deficit. Even the HD4870 did not deliver significant enough gains to overcome this type of deficit. So it is safe to say there is no way possible for Vega to match a 1080 in perf/watt. Best case scenario is Vega ends up being a slightly faster 1080 for slightly more money, via a significantly larger die and a lot less profit for AMD. I expect an exact repeat of Fury vs 980ti, including the huge overclocking discrepancy (which could actually be even bigger this time around).

Didn't take long for an advice thread to turn into a vega absolutely sucks thread. You all sure are a special lot. OP there's a few things you can take away from this thread. 1) Ignore the posters who turned this into an AMD bashing thread 2) wait for the AIB 1080ti's 3) if your monitor supports freesync then re-evaluate what is known about vega once the AIB 1080ti's are out.

For 3440 x 1440, the 1080ti is perfect. Going Vega would be overkill for that res.

Surprised at how little info there really is. I just picked up a 1070 for $295 (price mistake at MC) and wonder if Vega will beat it for cheaper in a month or two.
