He still doesn't have a video card. He is choosing to not game for a few months to see if Vega is worth buying, or buying a GTX 1080 (ti) now. Unless he's ok with not gaming, you choose between the available cards.

You do realize the OP is who created the thread title right? Waiting is obviously an option for him or he wouldn't have asked about waiting.

While he has made it an option, doesn't make it an good option. Of course he has the final say in the matter, but going months without gaming in hopes for a better deal is one of those fools journeys that people rarely feel was worth it. You are trading a chance for a small improvement, for months without anything.

If he has another system he's going to game on, then that may change my opinion here, but based on the given information, I can't agree with Vega pushers. It may be better than a GTX 1080ti, or maybe it'll be cheaper for the same performance, but is multiple months of no performance worth a little later on? I don't think so.

It was relatively known that Vega is not going to release earlier than March 2017. AMD said Ryzen is going to be first and were saying H1 for a long time, so at the earlier April would have been the month. As of right now since we still don't have an exact date I'm thinking its going to be somewhere very late April or mid May.

I do have a card. The new rig I built is below. The 290 is carried over but too weak to play anything 2017 at my res.

So I intended to wait. Really did. Then I saw a 1080 for $420 from newegg (through ebay) and also had over $50 in ebay bucks. Hope I won't regret settling haha...

That's a good enough deal on the 1080 that I wouldn't feel a bit bad. You can always sell it later if you decide to upgrade and probably get most of that back.

You won't be disappointed. 1080 is a superb 1440p (widescreen as well) card, especially if you're working at post-60 FPS. The 1080ti is flittering right on the edge of a superb 4k card for existing gen games, but I fear it's gonna slip back a bit on this year's games (possibly next year's), next gen will have the 4k card people are after.

Great value you got too, start that sucker mining during your off time and recoup some of the cost

I'm holding off on making a new GPU purchase until Vega comes out, simply because I want to see how it affects prices. There's no real competition with current gen Nvidia cards at the 1070 level and above, so Nvidia is largely free to set their own prices. Even if Vega only hits plain 1080 level, I expect it to be priced competitively, making it a better buy.

What I really want is to make a whole new Ryzen-based rig once Vega comes out...

I'll throw out my 2 cents.
I just upgraded from a 1070 to a 1080TI. I have been playing Andromeda on 4K and wasn't happy with the performance.
I figured I could wait for a Vega review, but it might not perform as well as a 1080TI, and every day that I wait my 1070 value decreases. I already sold the 1070 for a good price to take the edge off the 1080TI upgrade and now I can enjoy Andromeda in 4K HDR with good frame rates.

After Vega comes out, should we start telling people to wait for Volta, too?

There's always something new coming -- at some point, you just need to buy the product that suits your needs and is available now.

to be fair, it is no longer May, 2016. It was known then that Vega was at least 6 months away. It is known now that Vega is about 1-2 months away at most, with actual news maybe only 2 weeks away. Waiting now is far sounder advice than it was a year ago.

My take is that most people asking whether to buy a high end card like the 1080ti vs waiting are wasting our time.
They will most certainly wait (most likely won't buy) or will buy a slower weaker product
