1080p, 24" monitors, and avoiding stretching

I use my 22" monitor constantly as a XBOX360 display for games, dvds and netflix streaming and am considering upgrading to a 24" for the added size and res for both PC use and XBOX.

How can I make sure what I buy displays 1920X1080 correctly (with black bars) instead of stretching it to fill the screen?

Well, if you get a 24" with a native resolution of 1920x1080, then you won't have to worry about black bars or stretching...

Just make sure you get a monitor with an OSD option for "1:1" or "Aspect", which will enable 1:1 pixel mapping and put the appropriate bars and keep the proper aspect ratios. Settings like "Full" or "Wide" or "Fill" will stretch non-native resolutions to fill the screen.

^ What they said. 1920x1080 is 16:9, which seems to becoming more prolific. FYI, 16:10 the other ratio for that size monitor, is 1920x1200. 1920/1200 = 16/10

Yeah, i'd rather not get a 16x10 monitor as i'll still be using it as my main PC monitor and on top of some unsupported PC game resolutions i think i'd run into it would probably be a little short for normal word processing and browsing.

I have a 1920 x 1080 22" and 24" monitor. That resolution is supported in most games the same as 1920 x 1200. You'll have a few less pixels to push which is slightly easier on your gpu, your screen will be wider than 16:10 which takes a bit of getting used to.
Lots of good vendors make 1080P 24" monitors now.

More wide is a nice way of saying less high.

I would not upgrade to a 24inch over a 22 inch. The cost for a good 24 inch monitor tips in the high end range. Better off getting a nice 42 inch HD tv.

That said i love my Dell 24 inch monitor. I watch blu-ray movies on it all the time. I tried looking at a friends 22 inch 1920x1080 monitor and could not stand it. The text looked bad to me. Perhaps just used to 24 inch now.

Maybe you're just trying to justify your 24" Dell monitor purchase, but 24" monitors are actually reasonably priced right now.

Indeed. One advantage of 1920 x 1200 is that you keep the height. I came from a 1600 x 1200 4:3 Samsung, and the height of a 1080p monitor sux. It's livable though.
