Will this work ok? Any limitation that might cause me issues that would make me upgrade MB/CPU before GPU? Currently running a HD 7970. Would prefer to wait another year before upgrading MB/CPU, would like to do GPU first if it should work fine.

EDIT to add:
CPU: i7 970 Gulftown Hex Core (not OC'd)
RAM: 12GB (6x 2GB) GSkill 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1333 (PC3 10666) Triple Channel
HDD: 2x OCZ Vertex 120GB SSD in RAID0 (Windows), 1x Samsung 850 Pro 1TB SSD (Games)

Hard to say for sure, but you most likely would have a CPU bottleneck. What is your CPU and its frequency? How much RAM?

I reviewed that post jforce shared, looks like he got it working. I'm hopeful this will work fine for a year or 2. I can't imagine my 970 with 12 threads will be too much of a CPU bottleneck- it's old but still holds up well. If anyone else has a thought I'd love to hear it.

If you can OC the i7 970, that would help. A gulftown/westmere hexcore at 4GHz+ is still pretty good.

I updated the original post to include more details.

Primary reason for the new GPU is I just grabbed very lightly used PG279Q for a steal of a price and that HD7970 just doesn't cut it.

Updating this thread to post that I pulled the trigger, got a EVGA 1080ti SC2 from the local MicroCenter yesterday and it works just fine on my P6T

Getting it to work with the P6T was a little quirky. Before I installed it I was sure to uninstall and remove the drivers for the Radeon 7970 it was replacing. In addition to this, I had to clear CMOS on the board and enable ExpressGate per recommendations I read on the Asus forum. Once I did that I was able to get it up and running (couldn't get a signal to the monitor otherwise). Enabled GSync on my PG279Q, told it I wanted 144Hz refresh rate and man-o-man is this running buttery smooth now! Expensive investment but when I'm sitting in front of it enjoying a game I'm a happy camper!

Thanks for the replies earlier guys. My PC budget is exhausted for 2017, will be waiting until 2018 for CPU/MB/RAM improvements.

Hi deustroop - I think the screen is beautiful and fast. Really have to try to find fault with the PG279Q, I spent a few months shopping and looking at displays in Microcenter before settling on what I wanted. Microcenter is pretty much the only store withing 200 miles with high end gaming monitors in stock and on display for review. I think it's really important that you actually experience looking at a monitor before spending big money on one. I probably made 4 trips to look at them before buying one.

It's not 4k, so it's hard to justify this much money on a 1440p monitor, but games look absolutely gorgeous. I'm settling in, as this will likely be my monitor/GPU combination for a good 4 years now...

Yes.
I pulled the trigger too.Thx for the recommendation.
Love it.( I had the PB 278Q, which I gave to a friend).
Now I have to replace my video card but only when prices come down .
