Wik, I went to the Staples website and search for the Maxtor 40 GB 7200 drive. It doesn't mention ATA100 anywhere on the website.

I will never buy Western Digital again. I had a 30gb drive, and it died on me today. Over 15gb of data, GONE!

Only buy IBM. Not only do they have quality drives, but they are the fastest IDE drive out to date.

Ata 66, Ata 100.... IT DONT FREAKING MATTER! They dont even come close to maximizing the bandwidth. Even storage review comments Ata 33 is pretty much the same thing in most situations.

daniel: While I agree with you completely that ATA/100 is needless overkill right now, can you point to the StorageReview article that says ATA/33 is basically the same as ATA/66 or ATA/100?

I have a question.. I had the $20 off for buy.com ($100 or more) in my basket from yesterday, i just added the $30 off for $150. The drive now shows up in my basket for $119 (before rebate).

Will this Work? or am i just kidding myself.

It is mentioned on the first page of the Western Digital article in question.

Okay, so it's fairly well-known at this point that this is not in fact the fastest IDE drive out there, (IBM still holds that honor with it's fantastic Deskstar 75GXP). Soooo,.... Why not update the title?

Do what I did - call that 888 number at the bottom of the WD Rebate form. I told them I was thinking of ordering a hard drive that is backordered. If the hard drive were to be backordered for say 28 days, would they base the "must be mailed 30 days after" receipt thingy upon the date I received my drive or the date on the receipt. I was told that even if I hadn't received the drive yet, I should mail in the rebate form. They would then send a letter later saying "hey you forgot your UPC" basically, and to include it then.

So do what I did, be sure to write down the persons name that you spoke to, include a note inside your rebate form envelope explaining the situation, write down the date and time you called, keep copies of everything you send them, get proof of delivery when you send the rebate. This way if they give you any crap about the rebate you can tell them you talked to so-and-so on this day, and this is what they told me, and you know they received the rebate form on XX day.

Good luck.

Floyd, I guess you're referring to this line:

"Remember that since IDE drives have yet to break sequential transfer rates greater than even 40 MB/se that ATA-66 (and in most cases, even ATA-33) interfaces will run the drive at optimal performance."

Keep in mind that 40 mb/sec is the top speed of ULTRA WIDE SCSI. ATA/66 cards can handle 66 mb/sec, and ATA/100 cards handle, of course, 100 mb/sec. Their point here is that many drives don't burst data faster than 40 mb/sec to the controller. Though, remember, 40 mb/sec is the same speed as SCSI, not slower.

The review doesn't seem to actually say whether or not this drive will go faster than 40 mb/sec, and I'm not sure why. Maybe there are too many CPU variables to say with certainty.

My point was that saying SCSI is faster than ATA/66 or ATA/100 is just wrong. Saying SCSI is faster than an ATA/66 drive that doesn't operate at ATA/66 speeds, okay...

You got the WD a while ago? Weird, I thought the IBM's were the first, and they came out a couple of months ago, maybe like 4-5, and Mastor just matched, and WD just matched, so I dont know how long, a while ago, is but, to me it's longer than a motnh. just noticing

Montyburns, perhaps there was a misunderstanding. My reference to the StorageReview article was not in defense or rebuttal of their statement. Besides, I prefer to avoid any debate which involves IDE vs. SCSI...aside from performance, there are too many variables one must weigh when choosing, among them cost, upgradability, reliability, and usage patterns.

Best regards,
Floyd

this drive is certainly the fastest ATA drive in the market. You'll see when this drive becomes READILY available.

My statement means a drive that is only ata66 can spank a drive that is ata100. Basically, it depends more on the drive and the size of the platters than on the ata standard it is running on. The fact is, IDE drives just arent fast enough to even push 40meg a sec. Maybe they can burst it that fast for a few milliseconds on that optimal part on the hard drive. And SCSI.. OMG!!!!! SCSI is WAY faster. Talk about half the access times. Some SCSI drives are at 4.5 (milli seconds i think) while IDE's hovers just under 9. I cant afford SCSI, but if I could, thats what what be in my system. Though the 105 gigs I have kick but for the price I paid (thanks to anandtech hot deals SCSI can handle so much more, you can play games while someone is leeching your comp, try that with IDE when someone is copying a VCD from your HD. And whats the fastest IDE HD The IBM 75GX series, I wouldnt even put Western Digital and IBM in the same league anymore, their name of caviar is for expensive SH!T! Same with Maxor, I have rma'd atleast 4 drives this year from them. That WD 40g was rated high because they hadn't received the competitors drives for the same size. People are so stupid I sware, they need to read just a little bit more.

I just received my 30gig that I ordered from Buy.com and its supposed to be at 30gig 7200rpm ata66, but the box said ultra ATA100. I wonder how much faster is it??

Questions for all of you, how do u format you partition your drives that big.
Do you make it NTFS, FAT32 or FAT16???

Just wondering.....
